I've just been on the phone to a chap I know (originally from Ukraine).

He rang to ask for a price for some materials to be delivered to Lo bro

I had to get him to repeat a couple of times, still couldn't get it, so he clarified that it was near Leicester (Lester).. and then I got it

ah right.. Loughborough (Luff burrer)

close, but no cigar..

I mean, it's not exactly Rocket Science.. (luckily for NASA)

Apparently 'pleaded' is the usual North American and Scottish past tense of 'plead' . 'Pled' in the rest of the world perhaps? No - apparently both forms are used just about everywhere.

At least, that's what the OED and Merriam-Webster seem to think.

In point of fact, all verbs are made up (depending on how far back you go).

I was thinking more along the lines of debere, habere, iacere and so on.

All made up.

There's me thinking Sunday was the 7th day of rest. (Saturday for Judaism?)

I've always treated Monday as the start of the week, and I had to choose my UK diaries to suit - they were 80/20 on Sunday/Monday.

e.g. Week number one in the year is the one with the first Thursday. Three days before, three days after. Monday as the beginning of Week one. ISO8601.

And today's date is 2025-03-23.

I find that styling it as 2025.03.23 tends to remove some of the ambiguity (which wouldn't be a problem with your example anyway).

Tuesday is the best 1st day of the week as it means sunday-monday are my days off

Best schedule I ever had
5 days on, 1 off, 5 days on each pay period
On the 6th week, 4 day weekend
Lasted three months
The other departments were not able to do something similar & demanded we go back to a "normal" schedule

Back in the day at Thames TV, we had a 7-day fortnight.

M-T On; W-T-F Off; S-S ON
M-T Off; W-T-F ON; S-S Off

By taking 5 days leave (we had 25) you could get nearly 2 weeks off.

Then by 1984, they needed more hours, so all shifts became 12hour shifts, and Friday (if rostered) became 12 hours at double time.

That lasted for several years, none of us ever earned so much again. Golden times!

I think they instituted it to reduce the number of people coming in early & staying late M-Th, then leaving early on Friday so that they don't incur OT. By shifting the work week to end on Thursday, one is less likely to work extra hours earlier in the week, because you'll only get to leave early on Thursday, and still work a full day on Friday.

Another reason might be that it is a school district, and staff that might need to work weekend events are hourly, so by having the week start on Friday means those weekend hours are at straight time, not OT, and their supervisor can send them home early on Wednesday or Thursday to avoid having to pay OT.

Aaaaarrrrgh.

My work week starts on Monday. We get two days off a week. They have to be contiguous. That means they can't be Sunday Monday because that's two different weeks.

I think a forum refresh via renaming of the subforums is in order.
