The Fourth Estate has failed us.
And I don't mean this in the same way as the people screaming profanities about "MSM Media", because those people are just blithering idiots. Fringe websites peddling bullshit conspiracy theories are not, in fact, somehow better than the "MSM Media", whatever "MSM Media" even means. What I mean is that the Fourth Estate has abdicated any sense of responsibility that they had toward addressing the most important issues facing the world today. They've abdicated any claim to being journalists or practicing journalism. They have failed to hold those who wield power accountable for their actions. And they have failed this country, at least, and probably many others. We are on our own now. And we are fucked.

Cutting a sandwich in half diagonally is wrong.
Sandwiches should be cut in half vertically. |

In half?
You guys don't use an old soup can to cut a circle out of the middle and have the sandwich donut first, saving the crust-free center section for last as if it's some sort of delicacy? Weirdos.

Top crusts and bottom crusts are not equal. They have different textures and hardnesses, resulting in a different experience when eating them. Cutting it vertically results in each half having one side crust, half of the top crust and half of the bottom crust. The experience when eating each half is the same. seamus26 wrote: I never stand my sandwiches up to cut them. (

Oh my! So much about sandwiches I did not appreciate or was even aware of. I will never experience a sandwich the same way. Thanks for the enlightenment.

There's no need to consider the third dimension, because depth of cut is not a concern when cutting a sandwich, as long as the cut goes all the way through to the cutting board. Assuming the sandwich is laying flat in the XY plane, the Z axis normal to the surface of the bread, your first cut is square with the axis (we'll assume X). That would be a 1,0,0 cut, assuming cosine direction. The second would be .707,.707,0, or 45º offset from your axes. But both are in the direction of the Z axis, or vertical. The second cut is actually a longer cut (Pythagorean theorem) exposing more of the middle of the sandwich. On a 6" slice of bread that would be a 6" cut (square) vs an 8.49" cut (diagonal). So, depending on your sandwich, you might also want to take that into account. But, your crust theory is sound. I will give you that. I had honestly never considered the top vs bottom crust idea. Point taken. |

And because I'm not a monster, when making sandwiches for both my wife and myself, I'll cut hers diagonally, because she prefers them that way. She'll do the same for me, because she loves me. seamus26 wrote: I work with CAD ... everything is 3D space to me. Another thing to keep in mind when cutting sandwiches is if it is going to be shared by two people. With a diagonal cut, one person gets the top, while the other gets the bottom. With a vertical cut, both get equal halves.

Also, the addition of sour cream and chives adds a lot of character. paired with a good grilled cheese and it's wonderful. And, home-made tomato soup is completely different than anything you could buy at the store. To note, I grew up as a rabid persecutor of tomatoes. It was only later in life I changed my opinion of them. We have at least a dozen tomato plants growing in our garden as I type. |
