1985 Vespa px150e
Speedometer stopped working.
I removed the cable from the speedometer, turned the wheel manually, and no movement on the cable. Hoping it's a broken cable and not front wheel speedo gear stripped.
I'm struggling to remove the bolt on the Speedo mounting plate. My crow bars are either too big or too small to pry down the front fork.
Is there a socket wrench that's small enough to get in there and unscrew it without needing a helper or a medium size crow bar?

8mm 1/4" drive socket or open end wrench should do it IIRC. You shouldn't need to pry down on the fork.

VOODOO!!!!
THANK YOU!
Just needed a little more confidence and guidance from someone with more experience.
I found this ignition wrench set, and it worked perfectly!
When I remove the cable end it was quite dirty.
Any tricks on getting out the Speedo gear if needed?
ADDENDUM:
Got my 16 yo son to help. Awesome!
I took off the headset. The speedo cable works fine, it spins up top and moves the speedometer when I spin it.
Next step is speedo gear replacement. I'll order the gear and grommet….

Also, can I attach an electric drill to the end of the Speedo cable and run it slowly to determine if the speedometer itself is working?
Yup, it's a very tight area to be able to remove that little screw. I finally ended up replacing all of those hex screws with an allen head cap screw. It makes it much easier to unscrew with a ball head allen wrench.

Those craftsman ignition wrenches are pretty nice to have. I carry both a 7mm and 8mm in my scooter's onboard tool kit. The super thin wrenches make it easier to adjust the cable pinch bolts.

You should be able to pull it out of the hole you uncovered removing the cable w/ needle nose pliers. It helps to rotate front wheel clockwise to push the gear out of there.

Sounds nuts, but try Amazon? I recently wanted a few Bajaj & LML items available on eBay from India but found same on Amazon also India but less hassle for me if any problem. Look here :
AEspares New Speedometer Drive Kit Speedometer Gear Vespa LML PX Star Stella Scooter https://a.co/d/6dyTO1p

That's a few bucks more for the gear plus all new other bits or you can find just the gear.

Appreciate the support!
Turns out scooter Mercato was out of the set, but I could order the gear and grommet separately. Should have them by end of week!
Seriously, thanks a ton!!!!

I removed the rubber grommet,
But I'm having difficulty removing the metal bushing behind. This bike hasn't had much love, so I'm figuring it's been decades since it was last removed. Lots of rust and junk inside. I read MV and tried inserting the Speedo cable and turning the wheel and try to work it out from the gear. Any additional advice before I remove the wheel hub and get deep into this…..

You need to let that shizzle soak my nizzle with some penetrating fluid. I like Kroil but there are others out there. You can use an easy out while pulling. It might funkle up the bushing but you can always install a new one. Give that scoot some love!

Huge THANK YOU to Whodatschrome, BajaRob and Voodoo!
I oiled up that buggar bushing. Got an easy out screw. Used a half dozen other tools, and was finally able to remove it! Huge sense of accomplishment.
New speedo gear arrives tomorrow. Will change the gear and replace the cable. Hoping this fixes the speedometer…. We'll see…..

I was finally able to extract the speedo gear. Needed to use the smallest easy out to get it removed.
Here are some photos. One side is crushed, the other side has some worn gears. Do these photos provide any insight into what happened? Is this normal wear and tear?

Most importantly….. when I put in the new greased speedo gear….. do I want to gently roll the front tire as if it was going forward? Clockwise? Not backwards?
