Well, that's what I get for rushing...

I started off with a few minutes to adjust the shifter cables.

First off, someone replaced the original cable pinchbolts with these bottomless ones. No bueno.
Next I noticed lots of excess outer in the tunnel.

So I pulled out the headlight to inspect. Yep, new outers, just too long. No biggie, I'll get to trimming them later.

On to pulling the shifter tube out and grease. It's super stiff.
Well, I pulled the clutch lever and clutch cable inner out and proceeded to try to pull the tube out
I gave it a couple of good squirted some Teflon lube in there, and yanked some more.

Then it dawned on me - the clutch cable outer! Dooohhhh! I essentially jacked it up to the point I cannot even slide a cable into it! Sigh ...

So the next chance I have it'll be pull the outer out from the bottom, just far enough I can see the damage I inflicted, and install a new shift outer... Facepalm emoticon

Yeah, you jacked that good. Crying or Very sad emoticon But it doesn't exactly look new. It could be worse - it could have gone south while you were riding far from home. New cables will make your scoot happy. Razz emoticon

My thoughts exactly. You were going to need to replace that cable sooner than later, but it still always sucks to have the scooter pick the time on you, even if it's in the garage.

That headset looks too clean inside.
I'd like to see a lot more grease in there, as well at the shifter box.

Are you thinking the same as I am?
Why did Piaggio drop the split headset for 16 years
F'ing dental work.

What's your current plan?
I love my stock 150.

I KNOW! I love the clamshell headset on the Allstate. It's so nice to just pop the top and get right in there easily.

New cables, brakes, new fuel tap, new rubber. Then Sip Road exhaust, and 20/20. I've gotta see if I have a 20/20. I know I've got a 24/24. Then Vape. if the electrical lasts that long.

Keeping it a 150. But as with life, all future plans are subject to change! Razz emoticon

I just want to do some basic things - clean the tank, new fuel tap, new rubber, new brake shoes, cables, clean the shifter and throttle tubes, and whatever presents itself.

If (when really) a seal blows, I'll pull the engine and probably just give it a nice O-Tune.

But first I want to get familiar with it as it stands - original everything ...

This. This is the way. My 74 Michigan Primavera has never had split cases before and my intention is to run it until I have to drop the engine and replace seals, bearings, etc. " If it ain't broke, don't fix it." New tires and cables (inners) are the only things I have touched since acquiring.

So true! I have a method:

Ride it through the neighborhood at least four times.
Then across the bridge.
Then further across the bridge and into old town.
Then to the bank or post office.
Then to Fred Meyers.

If I haven't pushed it home by then, it's good to go! Razz emoticon

I put the shifter tube back in. It took three or four tries to "get it right". Between the wavy washer and needing to tap the threads of the tube & bolt.

I put a new clutch outer, and inner, but left the shifter cables.

I'll redo them all when I get some nice SIP Performance cables.

I drove it around the block. Time to start riding it!

Is this cable routing correct with the outer coming through the tube to near the lever?

It looks like I've assembled mine wrong with the outer stopping in the headset with one of those top hat things and just the inner going through to the lever.

This is the way it came to me, and I think it's the way it's supposed to go.

Unless there is a stop place on the bracket in the headset. I haven't had the whole headset apart (yet) so I don't know, but pretty sure this is the way....

My GL came to me as a pile of parts, the headset was the only pre assembled part. Yours looks right to me.

I'm doing a motor swap shortly, I'll deal with these cables at the same time.

Should there be one on the brake side? I've got them on both.

Clutch cable outer didn't fit through the hole in the headset that's why I went with the hat, there might be something stuck in there, I'll pull it apart for a proper look once I've finished the motor.

Thanks gents!

I stripped the rest of the fender. I'm not completely done, but this is where it's at for now. It looks WAY better than the green VNA fender. Thanks again Jon!

When I clear the lift (Chris's P200), then I'll place a tasty order from our favorite parts maestro David and get busy in earnest.

that cowl looks amazing!

Great reminder of just how tough the paint on these things is. Too bad they had to put a bunch of lead in it to make it that tough, but you can't argue with the results.
