For those who don't know, I host the MV manuals repository on manuals.wotmeworry.co.uk.

I've noticed that many people have started to download their own particular choice of manual many times over - obviously reading it from a fresh download each time. In extremis this can lead to the (admittedly huge but finite) outgoing data limit being breached, and the site gets blocked. Not just that domain, but all my domains on that server! This was a Right Royal Pain In The Arse for me this last few days, and took an age to sort out (now back up and running).

So if there's a manual on there you want to read - you are very welcome to download it as long as you use your own local copy thereafter.

TIA...

If this happens again I'll just turn off wotmeworry.co.uk - I do NOT want to have to deal with this again.

Yep. This is a genuine problem, and I am somewhat skeptical that there is a straightforward solution to it -- the behavior you describe is unlikely to change.

For this reason, I generally prefer AWS S3 to host static digital content, as the storage and bandwidth fees are fairly modest. If you're feeling really fancy, you can set up AWS CloudFront in order to cache the content at edge locations around the world.

I can give you more (specific) details if you're interested.

Jim! Happy to 'buy you some coffee' to help offset any costs or efforts.

I have not used the manuals, or at least not in a very long time, but I take comfort knowing it's there when I need it. I HAVE directed people there though.

The costs are minimal - just GBP 12 per month (which pays for all the domain hosting - 14 domains as of this moment) plus the biennial GBP 10 or so for each domain registration. I do not want to increase those costs, nor do I need any donations - but thanks for the thoughts!

That is a pretty good deal.

Don't I know it!

It's a legacy deal from way back at the turn of the century. I had a Developer Account with Peter Gradwell's hosting start-up in the UK, and when he went over to just dealing with VOIP as a Telco it was migrated (along with several others in the same boat) to another ISP, which honoured the existing T&Cs. It's migrated via various paths since - but now with Hostek and Pickaweb.
