Purchased to remove bounciness of the throttle body cracking the short hose that connects to the manifold. This is the reason I installed it, not performance reasons. GTS intake hose cracking (throttle body -> manifold)

Way fatter than the skinny arse hose on my E3 HPE which has a different part number vs the E4 & E5. On mine the oem was about 32mm internal at the airbox end and gradually widens as it goes to the throttle body. This is 47mm. I don't know what sizes other GTS hoses are; take your own out and measure the inside and tell us.

I have an Arrow exhaust and will be installing the Malossi cylinder kit etc so extra breathing could be of benefit.

Where and how much? Cheap unless you buy from an expensive place (hint hint). Most places that have it call it a 'cold air intake'. It is not.

I would bet yes, probably even from the same factory. Certainly looked fine to me. I'm not interested in paying three times the cost for a can of black paint, I'm think of doing a thermal wrap on it anyway

I think the raw metal looks badass the way it is. Way better than the black from Falan.

Why not the blue tinted one?

Do you expect the metal will bring more heat to the engine compartment, hence the wrap?

Opposite direction. The engine bay gets damn hot - stuff like the TB reaches around 60C. I don't want the bay to heat the pipe and that to then heat the air going through it. Cold air is better for oxygen density. I did also touch it after a bit of a ride and f it was hot

Good to know.

Should have bought the blue tinted one. Not only is it 'cooler' but blue = performance

If you're buying something for performance, and there is a bit of bling to go with it.. then why not both?

I just purchased the blue bling one. We'll see what arrives. Never purchased anything from AliExpress.

First new Vespa part purchase in a some time. I just cleared off some shelf space for it in the garage.

The current intake hose is original from 2009. The rubber bits are due for inspection, and probably replacement in some cases.

Did you find the double clamps on each end were necessary? Maybe some fat titanium or carbon fiber ones to complete the look?

SteelBytes maybe do a ceramic coating of the metal one?

I remember use it in exhaust and turbos some time ago exactly to reduce heat and is a very good solution and is more durable and less prompt to fray that the thermal wrap

ceramic would be nice but was thinking a foam tape about 2mm thick with a foil outer, like the sheets of sound deadening on the inside of car door panels etc.

not thinking of a fiberglass exhaust wrap as that goes brittle with heat and sucks if you have to grab it and wrestle while removing the pipe to remove the TB for cleaning etc.

yes, it will make sense when you install it.

tips:

* remove the silicone joiners from the pipe and sit them in the sun for a while.

* put the silicone joiners on the airbox and TB and put their clamps on tight. Don't need to remove these again when removing the pipe to remove the TB etc.

* use a marker to mark the pipe at each end a known amount, eg 2cm

* slide the other two clamps onto the pipe and insert the pipe into the joiners. There should be enough flex in the silicone.

* using the marks as a guide you can then wiggle it in far enough to be sure of the hose clamps will be well positioned over the pipe.

Wrapped it.

Layer of PU foam* tape 5mm then layer of silver tape.

It seems to me that the air being sucked in is in the pipe for such a short time that it doesn't have a chance to warm up

Why did you go metal again? To keep the rubbery bits from disintegrating into your engine?

Why did I order the same metal-y bits..? Oh yeah, the fun bling factor.

But now that it looks like HVAC ductwork.. which is basically what it's supposed to be.. not sure if I want to install it anymore. 🙃

When adding bling you always need to think about if there is a side effect (apart from cost). One which bugs me is why people replace plastic parts of trim with aluminium. Rizoma is especially bad for selling these and some from Zelioni etc.

Back to my story ...

When I took it for a proper spin the other day after stainless installed but not yet wrapped I saw that the air intake temp as reported by the ecu did warm up quicker and would sat higher. This is on the same roads and speeds.

How hot? It was sitting at 60C instead of the more normal low 50s for the same test.

Not ideal.

So wrapping is not without purpose. Haven't given this a test yet (apart from a trip to the shops).

Guilty. But for me it the installation part that I'm after.. the tinkering. I have the Rizoma side grills, which are useless. And some sparkly aluminum air scoop.

I had my head under the seat of an old MP3 300 (pre-HPE) and happened to notice it's intake hose. Fuck that's bigger than the one that was on my HPE. It was about the same size as my stainless

Many hours of 110-120 kph and the intake temp sat around 52c.

good, seems the wrap is doing it's thing.

still need to do some long slow speed tests with a heat soaked bike eg turn of highway on to long stretch of gravel on a hot day.

another reason for the desire for cooler temps is it's going to be kinder to the TB itself. I've killed two before so ...

Oh, agree. So in this case (I can filter here in CA) I guess it would be a hot day, city traffic/congestion, hitting all the red lights.

That's about the only time my fan kicks on. Maybe a long rip up the freeway WOT.
