So I am trying to bring a PX80E back to life- well it started out as a PX80E, but my friend, who bought it in Germany installed an upgrade (Piston/Cylinder/head) to make it in to a PX125E. He does not remember making any changes to the timing when he did the upgrade. But When I removed the rotor to replace the Stator (it was fried), I saw the timing was set to "A". The manuals I have say that the "A" mark is for the PX200E, otherwise set the Stator to "IT". Is it possible that someone advanced the timing to the "A" mark because the PX80E engine had little power and that is how it was set when he did the upgrade? Or did the upgrade require advancing the timing and he did not remember doing that. Should I leave it set to "A" or set it to "IT"?
When I got the Vespa, it had been sitting under a leaky tarp for 20 years. It was not in running condition. The previous owner said it ran fine (no knocking or pinging) with plenty of power, but he cannot remember if the timing was ever adjusted. I am not sure what gas they had in Germany in the 1980's, but would the Vespa run better on 87 octane gas if the spark were advanced a bit from the original specs? As long as it starts, I guess I will have to wait to see how it runs before I go back in and move the timing.
