A New Hampshire bill to allow lane-sharing never made it out of committee this week. NH State Patrol was staunchly opposed and arguments about preventing rear-endings failed to convince.

https://www.advrider.com/new-hampshire-lane-sharing-bill-fails/

Part of me is thinking NH is the complete opposite of, say SoCal with its traffic and 10 lane freeways, but a point was made about vacation traffic from Boston and NY. Also pointed out was the vastly different driving cultures, so with all of that, it seems more of a "that would be nice, but" scenario.

Lane filtering?
Lane splitting?
Lane sharing?

Over here these are not all the same. Not sure about where you are but it will confuse this conversation. And the linked article is mixing the terms ...

Interesting, seeing how you don't have to wear a helmet in the 'live free or die' state.

I agree that the proximity to other state drivers might add a complexity to fully understanding a very specific motor vehicle law.

The terms are used interchangeably because only about 1% of Americans even know what any of the terms mean, and anyway if they are all prohibited, it doesn't much matter.

Until they start debating for/against while having different ideas in mind leading to arguments.

ie effecting conversations require consistent understanding of language

Well-earned IMHO. Spent a good day walking central Boston years ago, and, goodness, it's not the Midwest!

Not that we don't have issues, mind you..

I think you're asking for a sophisticated discussion on the nuances of Shakespeare while the cavemen are still drawing pictures of antelopes on cave walls.

It is quite pointless to insist on splitting hairs at this point in the collective knowledge of the people involved.

I've been a "lane splitting" lunatic since the 80's and have never heard any other term till I joined MV. Had to look up "filtering" but I understood the other terms.

It's a way of life here in California and I can't ride these freeways without doing it. I'll admit to being even more terminally psychotic while riding a scooter due to being smaller and more agile. I ride to the front of traffic at every stoplight but only if I know I'll be faster down the road than the cars. I stay out of people's way and don't cut people off. I'm aggressive but courteous. It works for me.

A guy with not much else to do with his day might be convinced to head up to NH and then sue the state and state patrol when he gets rear-ended.

Not that a petty man would do such things of course.

I like that characterization.

I always described my riding style as "cautious, but not timid".

Lane filtering is allowed here in Belgium. Art 16.2bis in the highway code.

With limitations making it clear it is meant for slow traffic or standstill traffic only.

Max speed allowed is 50kph, and your speed should never be more than 20kph faster than the traffic flow.
Also you are only allowed to go in between the lanes when there are 2 lanes and in between the 2 most left lanes when there are more than 2 lanes.

It is a very common practice and specifically on the ring roads around the bigger city's, those ring roads are clogged most of the day, every day.
