Hi. 100% new to this forum, first vespa and 0% knowledge of the mechanics of 50cc scooters other than having ridden them for 30 years!

Just bought a 2003 (27km) second hand vespa ET2 (50cc).

Concerned about leak (see photo) but don't want to go to mechanic if it's nothing to worry about or I can fix it myself first. Mechanics, on the island I live in NZ, are expensive ...

Other facts:.

Bike had not really been ridden in 1-2yrs prior to me buying (ie was in storage). So perhaps that could be contributing factor?

What is black box for? As that's where leak appears to originate from, but could be seperate to leak around suspension.

Suspension appears very greased up. Could it be that heat is just causing oil to leak down (see photo) as oil heats up? But that appears seperate from black box leak (see marking in yellow).

Thanks so much in advance.

Ps. Bike starts and runs fine so far (day 3 of ownership). No Elec start but otherwise everything working.

The answer is very easy!!

This bike has be tipped over on its left side at some point, and oil from the engine has run into the airfilter. Then when the bike was put back upright, the oil began to run out the airfilter drain onto the parts you took the photos of.

To Do:
1) check the oil level in your bike. It is likely low. Refill if necessary
2) Remove the airfilter box and disassemble it for cleaning. Clean the insides of it well and install a new airfilter.

And yeah, obvious to us, but that black box houses the air filter. Pull out all the screws and you've got it.

Nice one guys and thanks. I did google it a bit and read it was the air filter and could/should be cleaned potentially every few years too.

Would be awesome to think t's a one-off thing ie from the Oil spilling over to the air filter from a fall. And makes sense as I suspect they might have filled oil quite high before selling it to me, so could have fallen over recently.

However I also read it could be that the fuel tap or carb float at faulty ie mean petrol is overflowing into air filter ... How would I know if it's this (instead of the one off) and the latter sounds way out of my skill zone to fix!!! ???

Thanks again.

Clean up the oil spill, then if it continues to have leak stains, you know it's something else like the fuel tap, etc.

Or the rear shock has taken a crap.

Clean it up, service the air filter, and keep an eye on it.
