Hello, soon i will have been on the road for a year and will be awarded a 1 year NCB(no-claims bonus). It is at this time when I'll finally purchase a vespa. I am riding on a CBT license and the models I'm after is either a T5 classic or px125. The license restricts riders to 125cc and modifications which affect the engine size are not allowed.
I have used insurance websites to check models ive seen on autotrader and i end up with mad figures like 4-5 grand monthly which cant be right, right?
My current insurance costs me 100 quid a month which at my young age is A LOT and i can feel my wallet screaming when the renewal date ticks over Crying or Very sad emoticon

Could anyone give me a rough estimate of insurance price with this knowledge?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers, Ellis

Mate, I don't have the foggiest what the costs will be for you because I am in the USA. However, I can say that here in the USA, the number of years a person has a Motorcycle permit without incident is a big factor in the insurance cost (independent of years of a car permit). Also, there are discounts you can qualify for such as enrolling in a motorcycle training course.

I have a 1300 cruiser and a 50 vespa. I was paying about US$180/year for the cruiser. When i got the vepsa, it increased my cost by US$20 to US$200/year for the pair. I have a few decades of motorcycle permit without incident.

Yup, I would have to assume they use the same basic model in the UK as they do in the US. Depending on where you live, for example, can have a huge effect on the rate. For example, if someone lives in a city where a particular model gets stolen a lot, their rate will be much higher than someone with an equivalent driving record who lives somewhere out in the boonies where that model never gets stolen.

A few things that will help a new rider:

As mentioned, take a approved safety course.

Invest in a angle grinder resistant lock that's insurance company approved and keep the receipt. Also, USE said lock all the time!

Sometimes weird things can help sway insurance cost. I had a pedal start moped and it qualified for a "prior rider" discount! Also my road bike (aka 10 speed) riding got me a bit of a discount. I guess they figured if I survived on slower vehicles I must know what I'm doing?

In the USA insurance companies also use credit reports to factor rates.

Insurance rates between you and a very similar rider can and will always be vastly different, so shopping around every year or so can sometimes net you a bit of savings.

Enjoy your new scoot when you get it! Shiny side up, rubber side down!

My understanding is that rider training is mandatory in the UK. I presume that means all rider/driver insurance assumes you have successfully completed such training. Somewhat different than the US. Though, even here, insurance for young/inexperienced riders/drivers is sky high
