I ride in the rain, often. I do not like riding behind a tall screen in the rain. This little flyscreen is not a bother - nor an aid, that I've noticed. Cosmetic. But if it were taller - it would not be on my scooter.
If my scooter has a tall screen I remove it.

However, the Italians seem to overwhelmingly prefer a tall screen (and a big-wheel scooter!)

Hmm?
It rains less in Spain?
The experienced European scooter riders in wetter countries prefer to ride behind a tall screen. Yes?

Whatever.
I'm not changing to a tall screen.

I dislike tall screens. That said, the small screens do provide a benefit -- but really only above 50mph or so. It takes quite a bit of wind off your chest, which improves the comfort at speed. But they also direct most of that wind past your helmet, which makes it noisier.

So ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I like a tall screen
I've replaced the windshield on every scooter I've owned with a taller one. I'll probably never own another motorcycle, no lowers, no shield, no thanks...
I have a long torso, so I can look over the top of a tall screen, if I want. I fiddle with the angle of the screen to get the turbulent air just on the top of my helmet, so the vents work.
Tall screens almost always have better hand protection.
Having my head & chest pummeled with blast furnace level temps reduces my fun.
I already look through glasses & a shield, another layer of glare & reflections, no big.
Tall shield actually keeps more of the rain drops off my shield, reducing the glare & reflections

I think it is on how a scooter is being used and on where in the country you make those pictures.

For Italy:
In the north, in cities like Milan, you see a lot of these tall screens.
In summer Italy is usually very hot, but in autumn and winter it is usually very wet.
Check now the weather forecast for Milan or Firenze: the next maybe 10 days there is rain expected every day.
And for many people in these big cities the scooter is their daily means of transportation. It is a practical tool, not something for pleasure, and then you want it to be fit for all circumstances. That is what I think.

More to the south, Naples as an example, I saw a lot less of these tall screens.

If I want to look through a windshield when I'm out and about, I have a car for that. A state trooper told me that if you look through it, DOT law requires an operable wiindshield wiper. Don't know if it's true or not. Prescription glasses, helmet visor and windshield is a bit too much for me. Right at nose level is where I like mine. Deflects most of the wind over my helmet, and if I get caught in a storm, I can duck behind.

no screen for me...if i wanted a windscreen i would get a shorty for wind deflection...in the rain i don't like the idea of a face shield with rain on it plus a windscreen with rain on it due to distortion...the shield on the helmet i can usually clear easy just by turning my head to the sides due to the curve of the shield...the windscreen is not as easy to clear...if the top of a tall windscreen is below eye level i would consider a tall windscreen but i don't ride in the rain a lot so i'd probably never go tall

I mounted a PUIG V-Tech on my PCX and can easily see over it. But now the top of my helmet gets wind clipped so I had to buy one of those clip-on adjustable extenders as well from PUIG. Can still see over it but the extension is kinda ugly but works pretty good.

Mid size screen works best for me, I had the smaller one but although I liked the look I found it way too noisy, even with full face helmet and ear plugs.

The mid size one is still a bit noisy but more bearable and I still have the option of lowering my head just above the screen where everything is peaceful and serene.

When I was commuting daily on the scooter, I used the stock windscreen from March through November. I'd use a Givi windscreen that is taller & wider than stock from November through March. The taller windscreen helped keep the cold air off of me & my hands. In the warmer weather I liked the wind on me to help with keeping cool in hot Texas summers.

Windscreen choice typically comes down to rider preferences.

I like being able to see over the top edge of the screen to a spot on the road about 25-30 feet in front of me. This means the top edge is at a height roughly at the same as the tip of my nose.

This keeps the majority of bugs and debris off my jacket and helmet visor. It allows me to comfortably tuck in behind the screen when I see swarms of bugs and to avoid windblast from large oncoming trucks.

I have a Faco Twin Screen that I've had for many years and it's held up surprisingly well. I did replace the inner clear screen with a tinted screen from a Genuine Blur (my friend had an extra that he gifted to me). When extended to full height, it is quite tall.

Exactly.

The tall screen diverts water and cold air, which is important for someone who is driving 15-20min to/from work. Many scooters also have the Tucano blanket on them from Nov to April. If these Italiani drivers didn't use the tall screens, then they would have to bundle up in very serious winter clothes just for the commute.

I use a tall screen, and it makes driving in temps near freezing totally comfortable (even with no helmet or gloves!). In Napoli, I've seen many drivers not even wearing shoes!

I think Northern Italy has the highest number of men in suits/smart clothes and women in smart skirts riding scooters that I've ever seen.

Tall screen, some kind of aprons fixed in the scoot...and you're still smart and dry after a ride through the city.

For me...depends on the bike. I like my own fully naked, but do not mind a proper screen e.g. in a rental bike equipped for traveling.

I do hate turbulance noise caused by some screens though, although I too always use ear plugs, full-face helmet and proper neck collar/scarf.

Correct.
The general idea is that you ride the scooter with the clothing you wear on the street according to weather conditions.
In summer shorts and T-shirt and slippers or even barefoot.

When I was stationed in Vicenza, I noticed the same thing about the locals. Always impeccably dressed. Even older men and women, on bicycles, were always dressed like they were going to church. You could pick out us Americans on the piazzas-jeans and t-shirts or shorts and flip flops.

I am another fan of mid-height screens for riding in cold or wet weather. I have cut down a couple of screens to that sweet spot where I look at the road over the top of the screen but the wind is mostly deflected over my helmet. In hot, dry weather I prefer a short/fly screen.

It help me fighting the elements of the crazy changing weather of NH.
Rain 🌦 cold 🥶 snow ❄️ & winds can happen in a span of 5 minutes.
Will never ride without , even in the hot summer ☀️ days.
But again it is matter of personal preference and experience.

The day I bought my GTS300, almost three years ago. Take a gander at that skyscraper windshield it was inflicted with by it's original owner...which mysteriously disappeared from the scooter within an hour of getting it into the home garage.

I think that I gave it away to someone on MV, but don't recall exactly.

And regarding the shouting-talk, Italians people are crazy loud, trust me.
But now I love the peace and quiet of my small town life in NH 🇺🇸 .

semprespqr , did you notice in the post above by OldSchooot of a photo of scooters in a street in Italia - his comment that not only did all the scooters have tall shields, but most of them had large wheels.

I too have always found this interesting (the big wheels), but I discovered the reason first hand. The cobblestone in Rome is extremely dangerous with small wheels. In Milano, the large rectangular-shaped pavé is even worse when wet.

I'll take dry asphalt or concrete any day over cobblestone or pavé.

semprespqr , did you notice in the post above by OldSchooot of a photo of scooters in a street in Italia - his comment that not only did all the scooters have tall shields, but most of them had large wheels.
