Modern Vespa

Would anyone on here with the required knowledge fancy having a go at designing 3D print files for making plastic blanking units for the 4 x indicator holes, headlight hole and a mock rear light on a Vespa PX? Basically fake light units in ABS type plastic.

Its for installing on a scooter built only for racing. Chances are they would need regular replacing so ready off the shelf print files would be a blessing.

Dimension is pretty much set, with one foot into 6 feet under, judging by the way my wife looks at me when I mention another project... 😁

Every project I start definitely seems bigger on the inside.

Ideally by August. That would give me time to get a few sets of them printed and installed by start of September. Is that feasible?

If you want just the files I could make that happen over a couple of evenings. I don't have a PX to measure, are Stella lights close enough, I don't know what little things are different? I want to make some '80s style light covers anyway so I've been meaning to take measurements.

Stella and PX indicators are the same.
I don't want to promise anything, cause my life right now is directed by my 5 year old.

I do have a 3d scanner, and a plan to scan the entire frame.

I haven't checked measurements yet to see how accurate it really is but I have a complete model of a PX I paid to download from somewhere a while back. I need to take reference measurements off my bike and compare them to the model.

I may have misunderstood, but I think dunf wants plugs for the holes in the sheetmetal.

If case use is competition, then name of the game is lightening. So I believe he wants caps to cover the holes which remain after removing turn signals.

Anyway, print them with one wall and minimal lightning infill and they won't weight much at all.

No, you are correct. I'm looking for fake light units. Its a production class competition so the scooter ideally has to 'look' like the street version.

The rear indicator files look great! Question - do the holes you have put in mirror the position of the lens screws? or the position of the light unit body fixings? Ideally would match the body fixing screws as its one piece.

I matched the lens screw holes but it will be easy to change them to match the body holes.

I'm diggin the idea of mock track lens' seems like a perfect classy idea.

Here's the stella badge printed.Not sure how to finish it. It has a texture on the surface.

I'd print it again with concentric pattern on the top (bottom?) layer. What filament? If ABS the you can vapor polish with acetone.

I've recently started resin coating things I want to look super smooth. We have a resin printer also so I'll just dip my parts in the resin then take them out in the sun to cure.

I'd say if you haven't tried ironing, this is a perfect opportunity. Just make sure to turn it on for all top surfaces, for the badge to come out perfect

Oooo, if you wanna get really hard core after you get your print spot on you could silver leaf it then clear coat to really get a factory look.

I just made this for my Stella. Obviously wasn't as concerned about finish as I've got the comic book thing going on. Since the badge is curved to fit the horn cast I printed it standing up. Printed in black, wiped over it with a white paint marker.

I have found though that often lettering looks better if printed standing instead of flat.

I would print that the other way, letters facing down, on a slick plate (or even glass, works well for ABS, with glue or hair spray).

I haven't tried ABS in my new machine but in the past I could never get it to stick on glass except by using an ABS/acetone slurry.

I had these finished up for the front signals last night but our power was out so I had no internet. Again, I haven't done a test print so no promises on fit.

For the rear light I was thinking something small, like a old style 60s lamp, or maybe a small frame light like a PK or V range. As long as it picks up the PX mounting holes then no reason for it to be a big lump like the PX standard light.

For the headlight, would ideally just be the front face, with a protruding shelf on the back to pick up on the OEM mounting points in the headset bottom.

Old timer sports car mechanic I knew told me about filling the windshield washer bottle with a nitromethane mix to squirt in the carb for a little boost while going down the back stretch.

If you do the boxy modern taillight you'd have room for such things.

Here's a tail lamp modeled after the "acorn" lights because I like them. Looking up info I learned that all PX's don't have the same spacing on the taillight mounting holes. I did these at 95 mm since that's what my Stella is. It'd be easy to change the holes if need be.

Yeah, I was planning on it. Just putting it off until I visit my buddy who has a currently disassembled bike. I have the fairing mounted on mine so it's a hassle to get at the headlamp.

looks mint! Yes i think those look spot on. I particularly like the grill version. Great stuff. Ok - the first prints I ordered for the rear turn blanks are due next week so i'll let you know how i get on with those.

I really need to get my head into this 3D printing thing as i've realised in the last couple of weeks the potential it has for scooter solutions. I've got some space upstairs in my garage that i could turn into a printing studio, if i can learn how to model and print.

I've been playing around with 3d printing for about 6 years now. It's wild to me how much the hobby grade printers have improved in that time. It's become much easier to get solid prints than it was with the machines available just five years ago.

Ibe been pondering between new pair of bitubos or a printer... such a hard decision

Go for it, you'll never look back!

My advice, go for something enclosed, it'll make the ABS printing learning curve less steep.
