Hello,
I recently inherited a running but severely neglected GT200 with 12k on the motor. After replacing a lot of components, I finally put her together today, installed a brand new Piaggio clutch, belt and Malossi variator. Ensured the belt was half way into the clutch pulley, variator was properly assembled (with 10g rollers), torqued the nuts to spec, started the motor and I'm getting no power to the rear. Took it off the stand, added the throttle and it does not engage.
What am I missing ? Please help.
Thank you !

Did you replace the variator nut, or secure it with good Loctite? It's a single-use nut and it WILL come loose if not replaced or augmented with decent thread locking compound.

Secondly, did you ride it before doing all this work? If so, did it work properly prior to servicing?

Does the engine rev freely, or does it seem inhibited, like it won't rev up properly? If so, do you have the proper keys? What does the immobilizer LED on the dashboard do when you switch it on?

Thanks for your response, input and questions.

I did ride it prior to disassembly and the transmission engaged well however the clutch was excessively noisy - produced this metallic ringing - so I decided to replace it along with the belt and the variator. Accomplished it today and a brand new, one time use nut was installed and torqued to spec.

Keys are original. It took a moment to start as I replaced the lines/fuel filter but it did and ran. When the key is inserted and turned to ON, the LED blinks quickly once then stays off.

I tried the variator assembly several times to ensure I had the parts on correctly, belt partially engaged in the clutch pulley before I closed the transmission. Again, the motor starts but does not engage the rear wheel despite blipping throttle 1/3 open.

really hard to determine what you did wrong.

suggest opening the CVT case and reinspecting.

also study the parts breakdown for correct assay of parts

finally watch a couple different you tube videos prior to disassembly so you can spot what went wrong

if it's the same as my lx, and I think most of these are similar, you can run it without the transmission cover. Just pop it off and see where it's slipping. You've replaced all of the components that transfer power from the front to the back. At least one of them is slipping. should be easy enough to determine if you can see it spinning.

Upon review, I concur this is not aa fantastic idea. Disregard this, future traveler.

I will do that and report back.

Can the variator nut be reused temporarily with loctite as suggested above until I source a brand new nut or will I face an imminent motor destruction upon start up?
will the bendix be OK without support if I start her without the cover ?

I'd suspect the new clutch - something awry there?

Thank you for chiming in !
Bought it brand new from Scooterpartsco in November in preparation of the restoration project so I'd assume it should be 100% functional?
Anything I should look out for ?

The cover has a bearing that supports the output shaft. Not a good idea to run the engine with the cover off.

Run Vespa 300 without transmission cover?

A clear case of an operator error.
Upon closer examination I realized that when servicing the final gear, I mistakenly installed the 45mm bolt in the upper part of the cover, instead of the 40mm one, which then protruded far enough out of the transmission case and stopped the clutch pulley from rotating. How I missed that I don't know.
I had her in pieces for the last 3 months and probably hurrying to close her up was not the best approach.
Thank you all for coming to my rescue !

OK, I guess I should have *I* would do that, which is true, because I would have in full FAFO mode. But agreed, it's not a fantastic idea and I don't believe anyone else should do that.

Glad to hear he's got the scoot scooting again. I've updated my post so others don't run across it in the future and think it's a good idea.
