Yesterday I buttoned up the VBB motor after rebuilding the cush drive and re-shimmiong the gear stack. I also replaced the layshaft bearing (mainly because I happened to have a new one handy) which I removed the shields from. Now I am wondering if it would have been better leaving it sealed instead of exposing it to any abrasive swarf from the gear oil.

Both approaches are valid and have tnere merits.

Open bearings are usually cheaper and.are lubricated by the gears sloshing the oil around.

An often overlooked part on the Xmas tree gear cluster is the small oil gallery hole. Having that blocked is more impactful than a choice of open or closed bearing
