Hi.

Bought recently this italian scooter to my 16 years old daughter. The scooter is in very good shape for it's age and she is very happy with it, but I'm thinking that it lacks a little in acceleration and power so I'm planning to adjust the valves but I'v been told that they are with shims, not screws. Is this always the case in 2012 fly 50cc 4t 4v? And is there a way to change the shims with out removing the camshaft or other major components?

I gratefull for any tips and help.

Marco

I don't know about the Fly 50, but my 2013 BV350 used shims and they were not hard to change. Removal of camshaft not required. There was a removable clip between the rocker arms that allowed the rockers to slide to the side, exposing the shims.

Can you find a service manual for the Fly?

Edit: The service manual for the Fly in the Wiki (https://manuals.wotmeworry.org.uk/Piaggio/Fly/Fly%2050%20service%20manual.pdf) shows screws, not shims, but the manual doesn't say what year(s) it's for. It also appears to show two valves, not four, so your Fly may be different.

Thanks for reply.

I can find manual only for 2v version and it's not with shims so it doesn't help. 2-valve version is basically the gy6 motor which is in every chinese scooter and is very easy to maintenance. The 4 - valve seems to be with a same engine which is for example in vespa primavera. It's little trickier to adjust and more rare where I live.

For some reason I can't find 4-valve fly's or primavera's service manual anywhere. I'm hoping someone here has fly 4t4v or primavera or some other 4 valve italian and can give me some insights about it.

Seems like shims, indeed.

There is a video about how to do this on the VespaMotorsport youtube channel. I cannot remember which video. It's likely a video about installing a Malossi Big Bore Kit on a 50cc 4V.

Anyways, you don't have to remove the engine to do the valves, just open the plastic door near your feet which gives access to the top of valve cover.

You might find that the problems with your 50cc are not because of valves, but instead because the engine needs an unrestricted CDI and removal of the speed limiter in the variator. I did a long post about how to improve acceleration and speed on a 50cc 4T 2V. I also installed a BBK and performance camshaft.

How many miles does your scooter have and what is the interval for a valve check. Have you ever ridden a 50cc before? They are slow by nature. A valve gap check probably won't make it faster.

13000 kilometres so I guess its like 8k in miles.I think the interval for valve inspection is 12 000 kilometres.

I have had 6 or 7 50cc scooters, so yes I know what to expect. Anyway Im gonna take the restriction ring out the variator and change 5.5g rollers first and see what happens. Also maybe try one size bigger main jet.

I will measure the valve clearance but bot gonna touch them as long it works this well.
