Today is the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500. It is the largest single-day sporting event in the world with participation of 300,000 people.
On this day in 1956, Paul Russo entered the Indy 500 in the #29 Novi Vespa SPL'. Russo would start 8th to lead the last 11 laps of his 21 lap day; out with a blown tire resulting in a crash. The would be the first and last time Vespa would be entered into the largest single-day sporting event in the world.
