When I hold the frontwheel firmly in position and the turn het steer I feel a very litle tiny bit of free play.
Is this normal or should there be no play at all?

If not normal, is there a way to adjust this?
Or what could be wrong?

Check all suspension and steering components for excessive play

The middle headstock has some play.

I can only find toque values in the workshop manual, but no procedure.

Steering lower ring nut (central headstock) 22 ÷ 27 loosen by 90°
Steering upper ring nut (central headstock) 27 ÷ 33

Where are these ringnuts located?
I presume both ringnuts are on top of the head stock and can be reached after removing the steer?
Any special tooling requierd?

I will do so and while at it also repace the bottom one.

I have adjusted the nuts so there is no play and for now it seems ok. No clicks and no nasty steering of wobbles at any speed.

We just bought this bike and are just getting to know it

I will add the bearing to my list of repairs to do in the winter (if the steering does not get worse again).

Yes tightening does help but also puts pressure on bearings in the long run.

Actually there should be bugger-all preload after the 90 degree back-off. There's zero vertical force on the steering column except when the rider jerks down on the bars when going over a pot-hole - and there's never vertical force upwards.

I tightend the lower nut to the point the play was just gone, so I think I did not put to much pressure on the bearings.

Anyway, I am going to replace the bearings and try to find te correct tools so I can torque the nuts to the correct values.
The parts suppliers here in the Netherlands charge approx. €100 for this tool. A bit to high price for a simple socket with a few notches. I think I am going to build one my self.
