What is the actual purpose of the intake bushing?

What was the actual reason behind the aluminum intake bushing? If the carb has an internal o ring or you use a rubber coupler, I don't see why you'd need that aluminum thing besides it being some type of heat sink? Seems like a crappy solution and make it have multiple opportunities for air leaks.

Probably both a heat sink and to protect the manifold from snapping off where it passes through the hole in the frame.

I always thought it was structural protection for the manifold.

How so? To make it more rigid or to not let the carb be a large lever on the manifold by having that rubber boot be a type of suspension?

The 2 flutes towards the engine allow for a few mm of manifold travel/movement.
