My first ever concert was the Beach Boys (1977). I was very young and went with family friends. The music was great but my main recollection is asking about the funny smell in the air

Try going to a Grateful Dead show. Even now, that will take you back to the craziness and more.

Brian wrote & arranged a lot of amazing songs, even in his later career - such as 'Til I Die' from 'Surf's Up'... There's some very good songs on his 'Brian Wilson' album, too, such as 'Melt Away'... Beautiful music...

Went to two at the Forum in LA. We sold sheets. 100 hits a sheet. A brick was 1000. Never got caught with Lucy in the sky, but I saw some go down big.

I hitched frequently up and down the coast of Calif in 1967 with my Martin and back-pack....most of us weren't - but there were some weirdos hitching rides.... like the Manson group.

Hitch-hiking was so very common in those days

Sometimes there would be 6 or 8 queuing on the guard rail for a ride when one walked up the on-ramps.

But - I'll tell you - THE spookiest people I met while doing that were some of the drivers who picked me up!

Never 'got' the Beach Boys. Beatles neither, for that matter. Too, nice?, too popular maybe? I don't know. But I get other stuff.

That's a common feeling, but there's a pretty good chance the people who made the stuff you do "get" think pretty highly of Brian Wilson, and of the Beatles too, for that matter.

No doubt, eg Robyn Hitchcock loves the Beatles; it's in everything he does, and he says so in his book.

That was Dennis. Manson glommed on and Dennis eventually left and stopped paying rent.

Never really got them until I looked back.

But for me at least I don't have to look back. The songs were played so much from the sixties to the FM radio boom into college, and now in the movies. These songs, in particular, Beatles songs, were and still are everywhere.
An example, Mrs Syd dragged me to see Song Sung Blue, a movie about a Neil Diamond cover group from Wisconsin. Good cast, good movie, I guess. But me? I leave with Song Sung Blue, which wasn't even in the dang movie, stuck in my head. Thee in the morning it's still there. What finally gets rid of it is the worst, most repetitive, most popular song in Beatles catalog, Hey Jude.
I sang that in my head a couple times and Neil was finally gone. And I slept.

Good point though. A lot of music was fed to us back in the day, which was great as I was just discovering my own music. My budget didn't allow a lot of music purchases ( LPs, yayy!), so radio was a good thing. Got a bit of a flashback of playing with the AM dial and finding WLS (Chicago) and the world expanding before me

The trauma is especially fresh as PBS has been fundraising and they just LOVE playing their old specials. We somehow wound up watching him, probably for the third time now....
