How do you feel about arugula?

I have only tried it a few times and found it bitter. However, my daughter said it was probably because it came from older plants so she is going to find younger arugula that she says is not so bitter. I will report back if she ever actually does this lol.

Note: this doesn't mean you have good taste or anything, so don't get too excited. It just means you have more taste buds and (generally) taste bitter more acutely.

So ... how does this all relate to cilantro?

I was waiting for cilantro to make its way into this discussion. Personally, I do not put cilantro in my coffee.

I concur. I only use it in tea myself.

AFAIK, not related, except that cilantro tasting like soap is also a genetic trait.

Arugula. Hmm. Can't define the taste. I somehow got it in my garden years ago, grabbed a leaf and it tasted like nothing I've ever tasted before. I loved it. Don't eat a ton if it, but it has a revered place in my garden.

If there was a question about bitterness, I'd say no. Now endive...THAT'S bitter.

Umm, care to elaborate? Having German ancestry myself and several trips across the Pond, I seem to have missed something.

My second generation Pomeranian grandfather drank his coffee out of his saucer....

Unlike the Italians and French I don't believe the Germans have a typical way of consuming coffee.

If they do then they hide it well.

It would appear that the Portuguese are quite like the Italians. They seem only to drink milky coffees at breakfast time - the rest of the day it's espresso or a macchiato (pingo = drop). Filter or drip coffee is definitely not a thing here unless you are a hipster.

I never drank coffee until I took a job in Bermuda, staff architect in the Ministry of Works and Engineering.

That job began in October 1990.

We got a morning coffee break, so I went with my work friends to the coffee shop in the drug store across the street, and I started drinking coffee.

It started with cream (half and half) and sugar.

After a while I dropped the sugar.

I left that great job when my wife wanted to move back to Florida after three years.

But I kept drinking the stuff, first thing in the morning.

We have been through many coffee makers but have settled on pour overs at home, me using house blends, Sarah French Roast.

I am good with it black, if I don't have milk to put in it.

Yes, but the marketing department will never pass on the opportunity to get "natural" onto a label or into ad copy.

I should mention that giant tub of ground coffee from Walmart was partly tongue in cheek, but emphasizing the fact that you can pay whatever you like for coffee, and there are coffees at either end of the spectrum.

Having said that, beyond being crappy coffee, I wouldn't buy ANY pre-ground coffee. I have a couple of electric burr grinders and a hand crank type here at work. Reason being, if I don't grind it, I don't know what's in it. I stand much less chance of drinking ground cockroaches if I grind my own beans.

In the US there is no legal definition of the word "natural" in consumer products.

Since everything is made of atoms and molecules anyway, it's all technically "natural".

Here's my typical cup of French Press. 30 grams of beans before ground to 16 oz. of water. 4 minutes in the press and it's all poured out into my cup. Leaving coffee in the press can make it bitter too. It's definitely not see through but not bitter.

The beans are Monsoon Malabar roasted to full city +. I've gone close to Vienna with the roast but starts to get bitter. Of course making a milk drink with the espresso machine gets rid of that. This coffee is also excellent as it gets cold and that's a big feature to a great roast.
