Cheered up with yesterday's wanderings in 'Outback South Dakota' that established that the brick bank building is still standing in Owanka, South Dakota, but apparently wasn't open for business, and it appears that it hasn't been for many decades.
The ghost town of Owanka, SD once was populated with over 300 people, had several churches, a school, an auto repair business and gas station among several other enterprises, but is now down to TWO people within the town's original limits.
Owanka, South Dakota was established in 1888, had a bank robbery in 1920, a murder in 1940, and gained a post office in 1907 or 1908(?). There was also bit of 'concern' expressed back in 1928 when the school superintendent married a ninth grader, compelling many parents to pull their children out of the Owanka school and send them to nearby Wall, SD or New Underwood, SD schools instead.
