I've been getting low oil light on my Piaggio Medley and have always taken it to the garage to do as it's not something i've done before however they can't fit me in for a few weeks

having looked at a few videos online it seems like a easy job so i'll give it a go myself

my problem is which oil
should I be using ?

i've checked online but been given various results

also synthetic or non ?

i've no clue about these things and don't want to get it wrong

sorry if this is posted in the wrong place

Anything 5W-40 out of Halfords will do.. Full or semi synthetic is fine.

It's not a low oil light it's an oil pressure light which is bad for your engine. Get it topped up asap and don't ride it at all with the light on.

NOTE: there is no indicator for low oil level!

The oil lamp indicates a lack of "oil pressure", not "oil level"!

If a lack of oil pressure is displayed while driving and the cause is an oil level that is too low, then it is usually already too late for the engine...

When exactly did you notice the oil pressure light? Did you continue driving with it? When did you last check the oil level?

Do not start the engine / until you checked the oil level!

If there is enough oil in it and the oil pressure light still comes on when the engine is running: switch it off immediately and take it to the workshop!

In the operating instructions you will find information on which oil with which specification you need.

it's been coming on and off since i've owned it since new
the dealers i purchased from did replace some part but i've no clue what
back in october it was coming on again and i topped it up
it then started running poorly such as stalling for no reason and poor power when revving like losing power
it then just stopped working when i pulled away at the lights made a weird noise
i took it to the dealers (the bikes now 6 years old so way past warranty )
needed £700 of work done on the engine replaced countless parts back in november
recently the light pops up again from time to time mostly when i've parked on a hill
i assumed it was a low oil light i'm still using it but replacing it in a few weeks anyway but rather than chuck more money at the thing decided to have a go myself see oil light on left shows a picture of oil so assumed it was oil not pressure this randomly comes on then off for no apparent reason

oil pump or the oil pressure sensor/sender could also be bad. the pressure sensor should be easy with a multimeter, just check resistance across the contacts. pump's a bit more involved than you sound like you want to be.

First of all, be sure you know how to check the oil properly. Set the scooter up on its center stand, on a level surface. If the engine's been running, allow it to cool for about 10 minutes. Unscrew the dipstick and wipe it clean, then re-insert it, threaded all the way in. Then remove it again and check that the oil level is within the hash marks. At the same time look for dirty, black oil & plan to change it if it's dirty. If the oil level is low, top it off but DO NOT OVERFILL!

Don't neglect to change the oil filter when you change the oil.

With luck your oil pressure light has been due to a faulty sensor and not running the engine dry.

PS. In the future, get an itemized list of parts and services done. Your dealer should be willing to do that. Also, they should show you the simple procedure to check the oil, if you haven't learned it by now.

You should find out where the oil is going to. With only 281 total miles on the scooter (*) and after a £700 repair, that's too much consumption!

Have you noticed pools of oil under the scooter, or a lot of blue smoke?

* Looks to me like 280.9 miles on the odometer.
