Yes, the Trench of Death near Diksmuide, Belgium, on the left bank of the river Yser.

It is the very last part of the trench that ran all the way from Diksmuide in WW1 downstream towards the see as part of the defense sytem of the allied forces to stop the German army on its way to enter France along the coast.

On the picture to the right you see the Yser river, and the polder land left of the trench was deliberately and controlled flooded to make it impossible for an army to trespass.

A brief break from the usual form of this game.

As I mentioned in the first post of this thread, me and another well-traveled former colleague of mine have been trading photos back and forth for a while now, and I greatly enjoy the challenge of figuring out where she is and (often) where she is currently eating, as we tend to exchange a lot of food photos.

I try to avoid using google lens as much as possible. Sometimes I need it for the general location, but it is only occasionally useful for identifying a restaurant solely from one or two food pictures.

I wanted to give you all a peek at what that process looks like.

She sent this picture:

Some of you might recognize the city, and if you don't, googling "big green bridge" might turn up some image results that you can scan for a visual match. I have been to Montreal recently, so I recognized it.

The next two pictures were her meal that day:

This is where the challenging bit comes in. Looking at the picture, she's clearly having a pastrami (or actually "smoked meat") sandwich (she corrected me) and some matzo ball soup. The surroundings don't look fancy, so it's likely a deli-type setting.

Googling for "best pastrami sandwich in Montreal" got me a listing on Yelp of likely candidates.

From there, it was just a matter of going through the list and looking at pictures, looking for something I could match to the original photos. Number 6 on the list -- Snowdon Deli -- was a perfect match. The place mats, in particular, but also the granite table tops.

So my final answer was: "You're eating a pastrami sandwich and matzo ball soup at Snowdon Deli in Montreal".

I remember getting some grief for posting a picture of crushed grapes on calçadas -- some people thought that was too hard. I maintain that it was not, and that this is how the game is supposed to be played.

You got it. The other clue was the aircraft descending - to Heathrow airport. Plus, if folk had read some of my other reent posts, they might be aware I was in West London.

WWII D-Day was planned in Camp Griffiss, the US Army Air Force UK base in Bushy Park.

I didn't even notice that made it into the picture! But the wall is stone. Does that count as insulated? And it's definitely not Spanish.
