Remember crossing around six lanes of traffic there in 2010 to get out of Florence. I think we went over Ponte S. Niccolò to get up to the Piazzale overlooking the Duomo.

Ha! I remember leading that exit from Firenze - we didn't lose anybody on that bit, thanks to 1. the marker system and 2. the riders had already had the experience of a couple of weeks of jousting with Italian traffic.

I have a strange recollection of being in the lead at that point too..

Were we actually using a system at that point? I thought it was a free for all until we stomped our feet in Barcelona!

ISTR Al going on about roundabouts at the first stop in La Spezia - after we'd both got frustrated by the riders going all over the place on the way there. That's when I first stood up and insisted on the marker system - firmly aided and abetted by you IIRC.

Actually you may very well have led us out of Florence, but after we stopped at the top of the hill outside I definitely led from there. Soon after we stopped for pee/fuel and I remember we all paid the attendants with our huge collections of loose change ("shrapnel") as we were on the last leg out. They were delighted to receive what was probably five times what the gas was worth! Did us all a favour though.
