I thought so at first too, due to the dark ellipse at the bottom of the photo. But on closer examination of the interior roof, it appears to be a beach shack.

Some photos you've got a good chance of either knowing or making an educated guess, others (like OFG's bridges) take a bit more sleuthing 🕵️‍♂️

I'm pretty sure that after a night in Annecy we rode over the little St Bernard pass from Bourg Saint Maurice and ended up at Stresa.

I thought the premise here was pretty obvious.

If someone posts a photo standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, or the Great Pyramid, or the Sydney Opera House, or the Duomo, then sure -- lots of people will immediately recognize it and be able to state where the photo was taken.

For the vast majority of location photos, however, the chances of someone recognizing the surroundings (e.g. from having visited the same place) is fairly remote.

The trick to geolocating a photo (and that's what this is called -- geolocation) is to hunt for clues in the photo that suggest where it might be. Some clues are obvious (the name of a restaurant in a sign in the background) while others are more subtle -- looks like Europe, or looks like a beach, or looks tropical. These clues don't identify it specifically, but narrow it down a bit. And sometimes if you have a couple of vague clues, you can combine them to make some educated guesses on where to search, at which point it becomes an exercise in google-fu and visual pattern recognition, scanning lots of photos from search results looking for a visual match.

So no, this is not a game whereby we test our memory of every location on earth. There are people who can play that game, but there are vanishingly few of them on the planet and none of them likely to be lurking on MV.

This is a game of sleuthing out enough clues from the photo to figure out where it was taken. And if there are easily searchable clues in your photo, then using those clues (along with your best google-fu) is fair game.

Now, I know you're already thinking about how to post a photo so impossible that it will stump everyone, but that is also not the point of this game. I mean, you certainly can post an impossible photo, but don't be disappointed if we all ignore your photo.

The point of the game is to post a photo that is not super obvious and doesn't include anything that will immediately turn up in the simplest of google searches, but still has enough clues to narrow it down to some educated guesses.

Syd -- Let's use jimc's excellent entry as an example. This one was actually fairly hard, even with his clue: Offhand, it looked to me like things I had seen in Jamaica (I've actually been there, but about 50 years ago). So that was my first guess.

I then started googling bits of the phrases written on the outside wall, hoping something would turn up. But nothing immediately obvious came up in the searches. I tried adding "food truck" to the search (as I initially thought this was a food truck) but also no luck there.

Then I spotted a word on the far right side that looked like a partial of "Barbados", and this seemed likely to be the right country (given the general feel of the photo).



From there, it was a lot of searches for "Barbados beach shack" with variations like "colorful" and "writing" and such. I switched to only showing images from search results and did a visual scan of a lot of images, looking for something similar. Eventually, I lucked out with an image of a very similar shack:



I then did a careful examination of the way the shutters were built and the layout of the doors and windows. It wasn't an exact match, but it was clearly very close. Then the name written on the shack clicked with Jim's clue -- the word 'deAction' on the side of the shack. A few more goggle searches showed that "deAction beach" was a place in Barbados, and there were many other photos that were visually similar to the beach shack from Jim's photo -- and a gentleman that looked suspiciously similar to the guy in the photo (middle) -- so I knew I pretty much had it.

And that is how we play this game.

Not positive about the exact location, but the advertising (is it a bus shelter?) seems to be operated by a company called BNI, which runs outdoor advertising in Albania.

Also, I only just noticed that your avatar spells your name. Sometimes I am just not paying very close attention.

And the Taxi company "Near Me" is in Tirana - the phone number was a total give-away.

That was how I settled on Tirana in the first place. I was just hoping to identify the specific location within Tirana.
