Hiya people, newbie on this forum but not new to Scooters. Been on planet lambretta for the past 25 odd years so I'm way out of touch with vespa, haven't owned one since 1996.
Anyhow , just bought a motovespa DS200 to have as a rat / rally scoot . Engine is completely untouched judging by the crud on it. It ran ok but obviousl well worn rings . I picked up a polini 207 kit that needs a rebore and am planning on using a 24mm SI and a big box pipe.
My question is ....what clutch do you think will suit ?? I'm a generously proportioned bloke and am used to my kitted Lammys ...anything that'll pull my 16st arse along at 60 ish is fine ...cheers from South Wales

Congrats on "new" scooter!

My recomandation based on experience would be a BGM 57mm touring crankshaft with a Malossi210 Sport. And a Polini box pipe.
Keep the SI24 carb, just up jet it.

I use that setup and did just close to 3000km in Denmark, Germany, Poland, Sweeden and Norway, sitting on 60 (GPS speed) all day long without any hickups.
-tops out around 70+ GPS speed.

Ok, I misunderstood.

The standard 23 should be ok. -I'm running that in my longstroke Polini engine.

That said, if it is very flat where you live, you could go for the 24, but I would stick with standard 23.

Here's what I think would make a fast tourer for your stature; 23/64 Straight cut primary with a cosa style clutch. Rebore the Polini 207 but use a Malossi Sport 68.5mm piston. If you need a new crank get a sip 60mm. 24/24 (keep autolube if it has), Polini box. Set up properly it will do 70+ uphill, while 2 up.

Greetings fellow dweller from The U.K.

Grab yourself a banded cosa clutch. With a 23 tooth and swap that 4th gear for a 36 tooth. With all the hills and Inclines you are likely to encounter on this fair isle, it will work in your favour.

Its what I learned from Rally experience as the best bang for buck modification for a rally going hack.

One thing to watch out for on the engine you have is the stator /flywheel... some are ducati and some aren't... but it should have the machining to allow for a Ducati ignition if you run the other.

Good luck and plenty if photos of your journey makes us all happy bunnies when we read 😀

Can we see some picks. I loved the DS200, rented one in Majorca many decades ago. I found the crossover of the Rally headset and forks combined with the PX newline bodywork without indicators fascinating to behold. Great scooter to drive.

All done ....will be lots of ongoing fettling obviously as the clutch cover leaks , the downpipe leaks , the selector box leaks and finally I think the flywheel side oil seal leaks ....absolute pleasure to ride though ...

Does anyone do a proper gasket for the clutch cover ? I've had it on and off 3 times , put flange sealant on it last time and I think there's still a dribble there ...

Look very closely at how the clutch cover is seated...

I found on my spaniard the clutch cover tends to want to sit high... soend ages working oit what was wrong to finally come to rhe conclusion that I need to dress rhe area where the idler shaft for the gear cluster is.

The clutch cover needs to be lightly dremelled to accommodate a better fit in that area.

The scooter uses all the same gaskets as a standard Italian model

Yes mate , I noticed how tight the cover was cut around the primary shaft locknut and I've filed that away so there no interference...I assume that's what you mean as well is it ?

Well, the exhaust leak was making up a nice little sleeve , no worries.
the selector box just needed nipping up ,
the clutch cover needed sealing mass around the flat surface as the o ring was brand new and the cover had been filed to clear the primary shaft locknut ....all sorted ...pleasure to ride
