Because the area is thin, this will likely improve the outcome vs trying to build up filler material, and require less heat.
Have him then tilt it on its side and put water in that area to check for any leaks.
Bolt cases together. Preheat. Wrap in welding blanket for longer cooling, etc.
I tried to follow the issue you had with pattern, was it that the actual cylinder studs didn't match the pattern they sent?
That's an interesting take, that may work actually. I want him to "fill" from the fly side, so that I don't have to dig again. I don't know if he'll agree to preheat and blanket, but I'll ask on Monday. I guess I can wrap it in blanket myself, after he finishes welding.
Re. the pattern, template VMC provided perfectly matched the stud pattern a.k.a. the cylinder. But I found that the pattern itself is not exactly P2 like. Stud bores are smaller, by 0.4mm and one of the studs doesn't match the P2 patterns available here on NSM. It's off slightly, which could cause mounting issues, but maybe not. Didn't go that route to find out.
In addition, when exhaust is bolted, cylinder assumes a position which didn't match any known reference. So went back to basics, and determined the location by lining up the crank, rod, piston and cylinder. Then marked the template and ground it down. Unfortunately, I was so excited to be moving along, that I forgot to pay attention to wall thickness. So I punched a window in the side of the block, and here we are.
