Is an oil filter wrench necessary to remove/install the oil filter?

Depends on how tightly it was put on and how much strength you have in your hands.

Usually helps to have the appropriate tool handy though...

Would you know of any tool that's sold on Amazon or like a Home Depot store that can do the job?

Well, you're going to throw away the old filter, so that doesn't matter when taking off if they get dented. Don't use them for putting on, as they don't need to be that tight.

Channel locks to get it off, your hands to put the new one on.

I bought the correct filter wrench for my Liberty 150 and it ended up being more trouble than it was worth. I used a pair of channel lock to get the old one off. It's fine to destroy the old one because you're throwing it away anyways.

Wow, Yea I was concerned about the correct wrench because the guy at scooterwest was warning that screwing the filter on with your hand is not enough and people have lost their filter that way.

I suppose if you've got poor grip strength. I'm pushing a couple dozen installs and none of then came off easily...or prematurely.

The other option is a strap wrench, but IIRC it's a minor PITA to get it in place...

get the filter with the nut on the end , easy on/off

I have used those filters before. Odd thing is, never did I ever use the nut on the end of it.

You can remove the old one with a big flat edge screwdriver, chisel or crowbar. Replace it with HF197. It uses a 17mm wrench.

Hand-tight with oiled seal should be enoung, but, if in doubt, you could mark the position and now and then check it it has turned open. So if it turning, you can notice that.

Champion also has that "big screw-driver!" tightening help on bottom.

Currently using a strap wrench meant for milspec electrical connectors on the Vespa.

Trick I have used when doing it by hand is to wrap a bit of sandpaper around the filter first.

strap wrench or channel lock pliers should get 99.9% of filters off. screwdriver and hammer for the 0.1%.

And other methods for the 0.01%...

Oil filter woes - Resolved!

When I bought my used 2021 GTS the oil filter was on WAY TO TIGHT. I used a strap wrench and it worked great. It only cost about $7 on Amazon and too that darn filter off in no time.
