Thinking about replacing the coolant in my 2008 MP3. What coolant is best? The owners manual isn't very clear about this. My Fiat 500 uses the pink stuff and since the MP3 engine is made from similar materials, I thought I'd use the same.

VW/Audi G12+ coolant meets all the specs and has the same pink color dye

It's the only type coolant my mp3 has ever gotten and have never had any issues

Thanks. That's good news since I don't have to buy two different coolants.

Reminding all readers the the colour does not denote the type of coolant. Different manufacturers have different standards.

My local Vespa dealer/shop verified that pink antifreeze coolant is fine and that green can be used too. Of course, don't mix the two. It's one or the other.

It's not the color (dye), it is the ingredients that is important

I think the coolant manufacturers dye the different types of coolant for a reason, to be able to distinguish between different coolant chemistries. Meaning, all pink coolant, regardless of who manufactures it will have the same chemical makeup. As an example, my Fiat manual says to use only pink antifreeze coolant. And I had a GMC Safari van which specified orange coolant.

Actually that Fiat 500 of yours uses a grape juice (purple) dyed coolant.

Just going by color is a big no no. As an example, G5 spec coolant is dyed yellow in North America and Europe but can be green in other parts of the world.

You have to go by the spec#, whether it be by Gxx or specific OE or ASTM spec #

My Fiat came with pink coolant and the pink coolant I bought says for 2006 and up Fiat on the bottle. But, whatever. I'll stay with what the vehicle manufacturer says to use.

AFAIK all US spec FIAT cars came with the purple stuff, BUT they changed specs and coolant part numbers between different model years. See link
