About once a week I head over to Griffith Park to hike around in the hills and I start at a parking lot near the driving range adjacent to the municipal golf course. There's a tall net along the road at the edge of the range but it's not tall enough to keep some of our local duffers from sending horribly hit balls flying onto the trail I start out on. I used to pick these balls up and try to hit the guy driving around in the Zamboni-like ball-picker-upper contraption (he's in a cage) but it's really hard to toss them over the high net with any accuracy and he's not always out there anyway so I took to saving them up in a hole under a tree, planning on a large-scale barrage at some point.

Eventually the cache grew so large that it occured to me that I had enough to go shoot a bucket of balls at the range myself, but how was I going to get them there, bring my own bucket? That's when I remembered my scooter comes armed with it's own internal bucket so I loaded them up and today I've packed a couple of clubs in a backpack and I'm heading over to the range where I'll pull out my own custom bucket and return the balls to their ancestral home.

You could probably sell most of them for 50 cents apiece.

My first job was driving the ball picker upper at a driving range. It was a Ford tractor with a steel cage over it except for maybe about 18" between the ground and the bottom edge of the cage. So the truly savvy sportsmen would shoot for that area and if the ball bounced and got in it would often hit a tire and then ricochet all over the inside of the cage. It made me the cranky person I am today.

That's like the power move in the old Breakout video game.

Do they really send people out into the line of fire? I've never golfed or visited a driving range. Maybe I should start. It sounds like fun.

You got balls is the title !

I live on a golf course, but I don't play the game.
