Vespa has announced a new 180cc aircooled engine for the Smallframes (Primavera/Sprint) in the APAC markets. In Indonesia, the new 180cc engine for the 2026 Primavera/Sprint lineup was teased in recent days and officially unveiled today.

Sprint Tech:

Technical Data:
Displacement: 174,1 cc
Max. Power: 11kW / 14,9HP @ 8,250 rpm
Max. Torque: 13.7Nm @ 6,500 rpm
Cooling System: Forced Air
Euro 3 (!!!)

Furthermore, I assume that, for the time being, the engine will be available ONLY in the APAC markets supplied by the Piaggio plant in Vietnam. There is currently NO—and I mean absolutely NO—indication that the engine might soon be available for markets supplied from Pontedera (e.g. Europe, North America).

The biggest sticking point for Western markets is likely to be the Euro 3 classification. Sure, Piaggio sells the same engine in different markets with different Euro standards (different catalytic converters, different control units/software, a second lambda sensor, etc.), but that doesn't seem to be on the table—at least not for Europe at the moment.

Same as shown on EICMA 25 / available in Europe already available (except of the navigation icon??? in the middle…)

Only TECH! All others only drum breaks rear. Thats different to Europe for 125/155: also disc break rear, but only singe channel ABS (front).

No… one per direction of travel, so it depends on whether you're driving forward or in reverse!

One thing I have long admired Vespa/Piaggio for here in Colombia is their refusal to dump Euro 3 motors here.
Every other scooter maker including the big 3 sell primarily Euro 3 motors in their scooters and motorcycles.
Piaggio/Vespa/Aprilia/Moto Guzzi are all either Euro 5 or Euro 5+ here in Colombia.

Before anyone gets overly crestfallen because you can't get the 180 in the US or EU, it might be good to remember back to when Piaggio sold a 200cc version of the Leader engine. They lowered the compression to the point it ended up performing as well as the 150. You could get the cylinder from Piaggio, and I don't remember anyone in the US liking it very much. It was an absolute dog rocket.
I can't find the compression ratio published anywhere, so it's hard to tell if this is the case, but judging from the specs they have released, it does look like it's detuned for countries with lax emission standards and lower octane gas.
When the cylinder does become available, some people in the US and EU will undoubtedly rush out to buy one, ride around the block a couple times, then jump online to give them glowing reviews, even if it performs just like the 155 they removed, because it's OEM etc. It will likely be prudent to wait until a few reviews from people who have ridden the 155 and or installed Malossi or Polini cylinder kits trickle in.
