I have an '06 GTS250ie with 15k miles, been a fabulous scoot (my first love in fact). I also have two '18 GTS300's so I have some saddle time on a small fleet.

Recently the 250 had an oddity on accel from stop, there's kind of a delay and shudder then things kick in to normal. I replaced the belt/rollers/guides and while doing that sanded down the clutch bell and clutch shoes, and it seemed to fix the problem for about 100 miles. But it's returned. So I'm inclined to replace the clutch and bell, as it seems like a transmission type issue than something wrong with the powerplant since the parts are not crazy expensive.

Open to hostile criticism though, bring it on

Check if the bushing of the variator is worn.

It felt snug when reinstalling for the roller refresh but I measured nothing, maybe worth breaking out the calipers, thanks!

Watch Robot's video on cleaning and re-greasing the clutch pullies. You have 20 year old grease in there.

Sounds like belt may be slipping, is there a lot of black dust?

Check the contra spring. Had this issue on my 150/190, upgrade to Malossi white spring fixed it.

Is it normal the first throttle on after replacing belts and rollers for weird noises to come from the transmission?

Is it just settling in?

Not sure I put the rollers in the right way as I brought mallossi ones and the hole looked the same size on both ends.

No, weird noises are not normal.

Are you sure belt was properly seated when torquing the crank nut? Loose crank nut will quickly damage crank splines. Open it back up, better safe than sorry.

There is no wrong way on Malossi rollers.

Does anything look obviously wrong here? ( Novice where CVT is concerned)

Edit to add used torque settings from
CAUTION: Clutch driven shaft nut coming loose GTS300/250

If you just installed the belt/variator/nut - and it looks like the pic, I would suggest that the belt should be further down the clutch pulley as to not trap the belt at variator. Doing so will keep you from be able to bed the nut to its proper torque. Loose nut = bad times ahead.

No.

Could just double check the torque but since you have it this far apart should probably go all the way for peace of mind.

2 ways to insure you aren't torquing on a pinched belt: 1) open up the driven/clutch pulley and wedge the belt into it, belt should be slack at the vario. 2) after torquing rotate the crank several several times and recheck torque. If belt is pinched this will free it up.

I replaced the clutch (the entire assembly, I'm not about to disassemble something with a large spring under tension). That solved it. Makes sense that a 20-year-old assembly that moves and relies on working grease might not work as well over time.

Thanks for all the suggestions, y'all are super helpful as always
