Modern Vespa

I have a 6x9 flag that I want to mount. The fender clip type, like at SIP, won't work. The dual-on-a-bar type for the license plate reduce visibility of the brake light and signals. Rack mounts are inherently for 1/2" tubing. There are a couple of suction cup units in the US that could stick to the topcase, but they are usually 20-40" tall and might not hold on at high speeds. Options are running out.

Those 1/2" rack type are usually a 2-piece clamshell with bolts up through the bottom half and into milled thread holes in the top half. What if I used this through the topcase? I'd be able to silicone the bolts to keep water out, I think. Having metal and spread screws ought to reduce the stress on the topcase top.

6x9 what? If it's yards or meters, you're likely not going to find a solution that clips on.

That's a big flag if 6X9 feet. It will add significant drag, and what about crosswinds. (Not trying to be negative here.)

Well, color me duh. I should have mentioned: inches. The mount is just 13" in total to allow the flag not to drag much when not in the wind.

I wouldn't be comfortable with that spear waiting to pin me like a bug on the pavement. I'd find something flexible like a rubber tube. Maybe use that base, saw off the shaft and stick a flexible one on.

And what flag? My guess on Vespa is: Italy !

I always carve away just enough of the back of a topbox and the lid to mount one of the ubiquitous car window flags. Here's my GT200 back in 2010 on my first trip with the VCdM:

Of course you are totally correct, SaFiS. I only have done it for clarity based upon Scooterwest inventing the designation. I'll be a good citizen and stay away from it.

Oskuk, I wouldn't mind that, but not what I have to "install". (My #1 heritage is Hungary but I also have family from Italy. It's cool how both are red, white, and green--just rotated.) The one I have is for Cape Ann, the region in MA where I live. (Website from an org that oversees many things: https://lovecapeann.com/experience-cape-ann/ We have the special license plate on our car; they don't do it for motorcycles, so the flag was next best.)

Thanks, jimc. That may be the ticket. I also have another flag I could use. So instead of one on the back, I could do one on each side toward the rear corners of the topcase. I assume it still stays water-free due to the overlapping lip of the top half of the case.

This would not be a specimen pin in a dump, it quickly removeable (flag and pole, not the mount itself, and wouldn't interfere at all when taking things in or out of the topcase. So I favor it over the car window mounts, all else being equal.
