Modern Vespa

Hello fellow Vespans—I just got a quote for $1,777 for a 12,500-mile service on a 2014 Vespa 300ie including a new rear tire. Tuneup, sparkplug, air filter, coolant flush, and a $103 transmission part. No major fuel injection or fuel or cooling system maintenance. Seven hours labor not counting the tire, for which they're charging another hour. Even assuming the $165 hourly rate is acceptable in a major U.S. metro area, does this sound like duplicative labor charges out of a flat rate book? should I just pay it? Parts list: fine. Est hours: too much. I'm an amateur and I'm quicker.

All I can say is "Ouch!" I'm all for supporting local dealers but frugality drives me. I'm not all that efficient, but I can get most stuff done. Well, everything so far. A modicum of mechanical sense and some hand-holding and there's a lot you can do.

Of course, if you can't for a variety of reasons, there's no shame in paying, but still, even for a metro area that seems high.

Are they at least going to buy you dinner first?

Vespa specifies that the 12,500-mile (20,000 km) service takes 150 minutes = 2.5 hours (see the linked service manual). This time estimate does not include the coolant change or tire replacement. 7 hours, including the coolant change, is (as SteelBytes already wrote) completely excessive!

For that kind of $. They better include 1 year warranty on parts and labor. Just ask them and they will laugh at you . I do not trust dealerships for service.

Your link goes nowhere. Maybe post a screenshot. At that mileage and age, let's assume the following. New belt and rollers, brake fluid flush, coolant flush, valve adjustment (1st check called for at 12k). $100 for the belt? A little steep. $100 for a new City Grip? That seems close. Vespa dealers near me are over $200 a shop hour. $350 for parts, $1,350+ for labor. From where I'm sitting this looks like proctologist rates. Too bad you're not close to me, I'd hook you up for 1/3 that amount.

very high---guess you have to pay if you cannot do yourself-----two stroke vespas we used to run until something broke---best days i.n us for Vespa, when Sears sold them for $325---new 4 stoke Vespas I know nothing about except they are not as reliable as the asians, and very few dealers in n america
