hey all,
I've made an appointment for my first service on my 2024 GTV, and due to backlog it's not for another two weeks.
I've currently got 980 km on the bike.
Looking for opinions on whether or not I would be foolish to go a little over before bringing it in (like 1200km?) I just don't want to have to stop riding it for two weeks. But I also don't want to jeopardize the well-being of the bike
thanks for any feedback

I think we need to know how many km you do a week. Are you proposing +5% +10% . My opinion would be 5 would be OK but dont exceed 10% incase you have a warranty claim down the line they might say you ignored guidelines.

Ps you must go over 1000 kms to get the spanner icon on.

I edited my original post to suggest an extra 200 km. But I'm guessing from your advice that that would be a bad idea.

I don't know what the 'spanner icon' is. What's that?

An extra 200km will be fine as long as the service has been booked in.

The spanner icon is a reminder that the service is due and stays on until the service is completed.

But do make sure you're keeping an eye on the oil level.

I can only speak for Germany: here, Piaggio has been extremely strict for the past 2–3 years when it comes to missed service intervals! Unfortunately, there's no official statement on this, but experience within the German community and verbal statements from dealers suggest that exceeding the mileage interval by more than 100 km or the time interval by more than one month can lead to the rejection of subsequent warranty claims.

I recommend submitting a written inquiry to the local importer or Vespa branch (via the Vespa website) AND to your chosen authorized dealer.

I also suggest you sending an email or text to the dealer you have booked the appointment with and asking them directly. They are likely going to tell you it is fine to do another 100-200 km (65-120 miles) on the bike before doing your service. They know best if they will be rejecting a future warranty claim based on this or not (I don't think they would, given you have already booked the appointment and all.)

But do check the oil level regardless.

The problem isn't the time period UNTIL the service is performed, but rather the general rule: If the service interval is exceeded, all warranty claims are void (even if the service has since been performed!). Example: First inspection at 1,500 km, damage at 2,000 km = Rejection of the warranty claim (otherwise, in the event of damage, you could enter an inspection into the system and file the warranty claim two or three weeks later).

By the way: The dealer does not provide the warranty, which is why they cannot deny a warranty claim. The warranty provider is Piaggio...

The Piaggio warranty get-out excuses don't apply in the US, and I suspect not in Canada either. In the US the Magnusson-Moss warranty act allows individuals to perform their own services as long as they use OEM parts. No need to have it 'clocked' by a dealer in Piaggio's system, either, though many dealers will enter it in on the owner's behalf if the parts were bought from them. I've done that in the UK as well. Just self-certify the mileage when it was performed...

True, but you have to have done the service as specified by the manufacturer. So if the manufacturer says to do a service at 600 miles, and you do it at 1200 miles, they can and most likely will deny a warranty claim.

I'd be strict on the 1000km service, as it is to me the only warranty-time service there is. as the 10 000km/2years does not count much, as I do not ride that much on 2 years, so after that 1000km service me thinks I do myself all. (actually more frequent than marked in table)

My fuel pump failed within the first two years so I took it to a dealer for a replacement. My 600 mile service was done by a guy who works from his garage rather than a dealer.

The dealer didn't ask to see any proof of my service being done before they replaced the pump under warranty.

I don't know if this is the norm here in the UK let alone anywhere else in the world and it's the only ever time I've had work done under warranty.

I believe maintenance is required to maintain the warranty.
And that's once a year or every 10,000 km—
whichever comes first.

based on daily riding since 1955----just got another new bike a week ago, about 75 new -scooters//----just ride until dealer can get you in----maybe only critical is oil if you worry----N America has so few Vespa dealers----they have to take care of warranty if you have booked and they cannot get you in in time. Vespa does not have the trouble free reputation Japan made and other asian coutries do.

I buy my bikes and scooters to use---and expect good service...if I bother to use.....usually do service my self and use dealer only for warranty.

Not my experience in the UK or US.

I think it really depends on location, and also the experience and persistence of the dealer in order to get warranty work agreed. I know the dealers I used in the UK always said the first attempt at a warranty claim was automatically refused, but when pushed it was nearly always agreed.

I have to say I'm not a fan of Piaggio's business practices and their attitude to dealers and customers.

It's not that I'm happy about it, but the manual simply states that maintenance must be performed by the dealer once a year or every 10,000 km (whichever comes first).
Although, according to EU regulations, it can also be done by other qualified mechanics.
Don't get me wrong—I do the maintenance myself, too.
I think that four-year period they offer now is mainly just to keep the dealers busy.

You're probably right - the way Piaggio treats dealers there's not much money in actually selling the bikes, but there is in servicing.

And practically nothing when the work has to be done under warranty and they also have to wait for Piaggio to settle the claim…

I used to do the warranty work myself, just get handed the parts by the dealer. That way I knew exactly what was done, and the dealer made a bob or two from the pittance Piaggio eventually paid out to them.

Yes, my 2 years came first,
so no use to let the service-guys rip me on 10 00km one. or the next one. or...
-and anyway, who rides like 30 00km before that 2 years? I think I'm in majority, riding under 10 000km in 2 years. So: my warranty-must service was only that 1000km one.

Was the pump part of the well know recall?

A recall might be different than the main warranty. eg for the recalled part there's probably no questions asked whereas with any other problems then service intervals can matter
