I have a 2023 MP3 530, that has developed a flat spot within the steering bearings, notchy steering if you will. I not sure if it's both sides or just one. What I really need is a shop manual, so as to allow me to do the work myself. To date I have not. found one, first question is, the 500, and 530 similar enough that I could use the 500 shop manual? Doesn't look like a really hard job, but I do need to know torque specs. Any help is really appreciated.

In the wiki manuals section you can download the manual

I guess it's no surprise that after 20 years of MP3 production Piaggio still has not been able to correct this well known problem.

They probably just need some more time. 😆

The "fix" is to sell more bearing kits. About to do this job on my friend's '09 MP3 500 Sport (Gilera Fuoco). I see it as an opportunity to remove and clean all the hydraulic lines properly, after previously battling with the brakes and tilt-lock system.

It is definitely not about selling more bearings but rather about not caring enough to do something about it.

This problem has existed from the very first MP3 beginning in 2006, and still exists today in 2026, so it not a age or mileage related disease.

As I've always experienced with Italian vehicles of any kind it is all about looks above everything else.

For sake of comparison, I just stripped down a Honda from 1991 with 150K mi/250K km. Its headstock bearings were only just starting to show the very first signs and only when the fork was not under load (bike on center stand)

So I ask you "why can't Piaggio get their sh!t in order"???

The answer is in the first paragraph. High on visual impact, high on price and meh on everything else

Piaggio *have* addressed the problem - they even sell the kit to prevent it.

https://scooterpartsco.com/300-piaggio-c-801_836/piaggio-mp3-tool-with-grease-fitting-020943y-p-22276.html

But do read the stickied thread above ^^^ Short term fix for "notch"? - It works...

Plenty of folk have done the quick and easy trick above, and then added loads of grease with that tool and never had a recurrence of notchiness.

That is just the standard greasing nipple.

It does not fix the notch, it merely prolongs the inevitable.

And why do all these MP3s need bearing grease anyway and so often?

The Honda w/ a quarter million km I just stripped never needed to have its headstock bearings greased or retorqued in 35 years of service under all weather conditions.

It is a inherent design flaw of the MP3, and Piaggio couldn't be bothered to come up with a permanent fix since they still use the same shitty bearing type design from 2006.

Product improvement is not Piaggio's bag. Bending the fenders a bit different and throwing in a different headlight does not make for "new and improved"

Piaggio can not and won't fix it, its to costly and now the stopped manufacturing the motor version (RL/RST) and sell only LT's it will get worse

They even stopped producing the motorcycle legs

I explained many time that the front wheels are not sitting straight below the leg, the left wheel is more to the left and right is more to the right so you get an pressure point on the inside

The Peugeot has a Aframe system and a central steeringshaft (is pattened)
and no real thread for Piaggio

the Kymco is now 4 or 5 years old and they can't get the allingment right
front Tyres will last 6000 miles or so

Quadro no dealers

the Yamaha nikken they stopped production after 3 years then there is the Tricity but a 300cc

IF they truly redesigned the bike from the ground up then they can and could have fixed this problem at least 15 years ago.

Instead they just give us lipstick on a pig every single time i.e. new look but basically same old bike from 2006

Is the notch the bearing balls themselves or the races?

It's probably the race. However I have not disassembled the steering shafts yet, still waiting on parts, seems that slow boat from Italy has not docked yet, you know the one with sails.

So if the issue is that pressure on bearing isn't uniform, won't the notching eventually come back after the bearings are replaced? Or are there heftier bearings to be used instead?

My MP3 only had 8900 miles on it, when it's back together I need to decide to sell or keep it, knowing it's going to happen again. Once I know the bearing numbers I may try and purchase a quality bearing made in the US. I have a lot of experience rebuilding pumps and have found this sometimes works, installing a quality bearings.
