I have come to a dilemma in my scooter buying experience, and was hoping for some suggestions from you smart MVers.

My local Vespa dealership is asking $4200 to drive off the lot with a '07 Fly 150, which seems pricey to me. I also heard that 06 was the last year that they made them in Italy. Is this true?

A gentleman from Toronto is asking $2750, for his '06 Fly 150, with 3400km on it, which seems reasonable. The only thing about the used one is that it is red, and I really wanted the black, but I suppose I could live.

Any suggestions from you guys and gals are surely welcomed.

Eric - you need to ask yourself some questions. The '07 probably has most or all of the warranty left, whereas the '06 will be at or near the end of it. Does the warranty matter to you? If you can't sleep without it, then you have your answer.

The same cautions that I had pm'd you about previously regarding making sure of the year, maintenance, etc. applies to the used scoot. I would be cautious about accepting a used scooter if the owner could not provide maintenance records (and would probably still call the dealer/shop where he had it worked on to verify that it was kept right).

Make sure you get both keys, and so on, and so on.

But, if you aren't worried about not having a warranty, and the '06 was well maintained and not needing any unusual major repair, than I would go for it. After all, $1500 is not chump change!

Thanks Michael, you have been more then helpful.
Are there ever any scooter get-togethers that take place in London? I would like to meet some scooter friends to go riding with.

For $1500 I'd go used (besides-offer the guy $2250 and work him down to c. $2400. Rember $2750 is the asking price.) Also, once that new one leave the dealership the value drops like a rock. Go with the '06!

He wanted $3200 for it originally, so we compromised at $2750, I am going to check it out this weekend 8)

The red color is arguably more visable, so there's that... External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text

are the 07 flys made in china or just assembled, the difference is that I would have more confidence in the metallurgy etc if the stuff was just sent for assembly. Also, not all 07s are chinese check for the country of origin

I have know worked on 5 2007 Fly 150's they are buckets

All have had issues "Mainly wobbly bits" I worked on an 06 last year and you really can notice the rideable quality of the two years mentioned.

I won't be making friends here, and i don't want to piss anyone off, this is just my opinion.

If you see this sticker, RUN

Cheers

I have an 07 here, very clunky 2miles and not running. The carb is loose, front fork seals leaking. Tie down issue Maybe?. Rear suspension bolt loose too Overall, they feel cheap now. Though i am just getting in to it.... Crap battery, cheap and nasty tyres.

I will be keeping you posted.

Hi Mate, I don't want hate mail here. Maybe it's just a bad batch (Doubt it), but for $3000 ? I received yet another call regarding a Fly 150.

I will keep you updated with my findings.

Cheers

I'd just like to add that the 06's aren't the Gems that this thread makes them out to sound.

I think several other Fly owners will attest to it also.

Now honestly, I've never seen a Chinese Fry150, so I don't know of the qaulity, I'm just saying, Italian made doesn't means rulers of all.

As someone else said, Italians design fantastic, but manufacturer, not as well. Have they ever successfully mass-produced any automobiles?

No.

Ferrari and Lambo aren't "mass produced," so that leaves Fiat and Alfa - self explanatory.

Ferrari's QC is improving, and while modern Lambos are much better than anything that came out of Sant' Agata Bolognese 10, 20, or 30 years ago, their current ownership by Audi AG makes them Audighinis to me - Italian styled, German engineered.

The Chinese Fly's have Chinese tires, and Chinese belts, and Chinese brakes......find a leftover Italian Typhoon, it's 2 stroke, bremo brakes Michelin tires, and you can always put a 70cc kit on it......

fly 150
I work at vespa st. louis and we sell the FLY150 2007 FOR $2899.00 OUT THE DOOR $4200.00 is alot of money for a fly heck you could get a LX150 OR A VESPA-S 150 FOR THAT price.
I just started working here in january and the tech told me when they first came out he saw alot of problems. Not to many problems from the 07 down here. But 4200 for a fly 150 is way to much. you could buy it from us and shipp it up there and still save a bucket a money.
Good luck either way!!!!

new or used fly
as a former vespa dealer, i can tell you, the market for the fly is limited. bottom line, love that fly, because if you ever need to sell it, you'll damn near have to give it away.

that being said, the reality is, the fly actually handles better than the lx 150. no doubt, it doesn't look as cool, and it's plastic vs. metal, but it's a damn good scooter. engine is identical to the LX.

buy the used one.

If your going to modify your scoot or do your own maintainance then the warranty isn't worth a whole lot. I would go with the used one myself especially if he had dealer receipts showing that he had the proper maintainance done. The used one is broken in and probably has all the bugs worked out.
