I got a small windfall of storage space on the server, and decided to allocate it to avatar storage. I know some of you were having a hard time getting your pictures saved in a compact format while still being, well, visible, so hopefully this will help. The size limit of uploaded avatars is now 16,384 bytes (16k) and additionally must be no more than 128x128 pixels.

If you have PhotoShop skills and can get good quality out of your avatar while using less space, all the better, but if you can't, don't sweat it. The key to reducing the size is to use the Save for Web feature, which strips the image of extra stuff like thumbnails and exposure information. In PhotoShop, I've found that a quality setting on a jpeg image of 50% is usually sufficient for a 128x128 avatar, and I can generally get them well down below 8k or so. If your avatar still looks crappy at 50%, though, please feel free to bump it up. Not every jpeg will compress as readily.

I highly encourage anyone who is currently linking to an external avatar image to consider uploading it to Modern Vespa. We should have enough space to cover an avatar for everyone now.

Over and out.

I got the same message for the 15KB avatar image that I have online on my own site.

In glasseye's case, my guess is that the forum software didn't like the excessive path to the image. This seems to be a weak point of the software -- anything remotely funky and it chokes. I downloaded the image to my machine and then uploaded the image via the user control panel, and that seems to work.

In Kevin's case, I'd have to see the path to see if it had the same problem.

Sorry about that, guys -- it may be that you have to upload the file from your local machine, which is another one of the options.
