If you have PhotoShop skills and can get good quality out of your avatar while using less space, all the better, but if you can't, don't sweat it. The key to reducing the size is to use the Save for Web feature, which strips the image of extra stuff like thumbnails and exposure information. In PhotoShop, I've found that a quality setting on a jpeg image of 50% is usually sufficient for a 128x128 avatar, and I can generally get them well down below 8k or so. If your avatar still looks crappy at 50%, though, please feel free to bump it up. Not every jpeg will compress as readily.
I highly encourage anyone who is currently linking to an external avatar image to consider uploading it to Modern Vespa. We should have enough space to cover an avatar for everyone now.
Over and out.
