My 2006 GTS has a gas gauge that sometimes stops working. If I leave the scooter for a couple of hours it starts to work. Any ideas? Someone at a local Vespa shop said I'd have to replace the instrument cluster......

When it doesn't work, does it blink? Are there any bars showing at all? Anything more descriptive?

Mine seems to read really low when it is hot out. Sometimes it just shows the left and right bars and nothing else. Happened just after the warranty expired of course. I just make sure to fill up every 120 miles or so.

This is exactly what my coolant temp gauge has been doing for the last week and half, from 116F in death valley to 40F in the rain and snow in NV. I'm convinced it's either a bad sensor or a loose connection on the sensor. It's as if it is re-calibrating.

Hey Starr! I hope your ride is going great! Sorry about your gauge - I hope it is the worst thing that has happened.

GTS gas gauge
I forgot to mention some of the details when the gas gauge isn't working. There's an indicater bar near empty and an indicater bar near full that both flash when the gauge is not working, Any ideas? Thanks.

I've had this happen with the coolant gauge. It a dirty connection where the gauge wire plugs into the sensor. On the right side of the motor (exhaust side) towards the bottom. The boot that covers it doesn't fit tight ......it'll hold water and road dirt. Pull the boot/connection off clean out the boot and clean the connection, push it back on making sure it's tight (the boot that covers the connection isn't tight it just covers the connection) then everythng goes back to operating normal. It'll happend again, so I removed the boot, cleaned things again and heat shrinked the metal connection and pushed it back on without the boot. Works better but still needs to be cleaned every now and then.

Does the low fuel light still work? I wouldn't worry about it cos my gauge goes up and down depending on which way you are facing and I think it is more annoying than anything. Just fill up every 200km/120mi and look out for the light, I'd check the sender too as it might have sprung a leak.

Mine is doing the same thing. Jess said it's an open circuit and either a wire is loose or the fuel sender is bad.

This is how Jess decribed it--

"Take a peak in the engine compartment -- on the right hand side, you'll see the gas tank. There are two electrical connections on the GTS gas tank -- one is the fuel pump (the lower of the two, with two black hoses coming out of it as well) and the other is the fuel level sender unit (the higher of the two, with only wires coming out of it). If you can, wiggle the wires and trace them back to where the go into the harness. If that doesn't solve the problem, you'll probably have to have the dealer install a new sender. If you're really ambitious, you could do it yourself, but it's a pain in the ass, and requires an elaborate technique to wiggle the gas tank past the engine so that you can get to the sender."

I have no loose wires- so I need to replace the sender Hopefully yours is just loose!
