This is a thread of no real relevance, since I do not recommend doing any
of this. But thought the tinkering minds among us might find it at least interesting.
If you recall, I bought an Ermax screen, cut it way down, and have now
fashioned a laminar lip out of the discards. Since I had cut off the top, this
was fairly easy to do. I just cleaned it up, placed 3M Dual locks on it,
( I used two on top of each other to add more tilt at the top) and tried it in a couple positions. There was one surprise.
The photos show it in what seems to be the best position, and in that position, the air still hits you in the face, but it is much more defused, and
soft. From my experience, this is primarily the benefit you can expect from a lip. I have never experienced the " moving the air up 3 to 6 inches". But the air you do get is more tolerable.
The surprise was, I repositioned the lip so that it stuck up about 3 inchs above the actual screen, and at the same time that also re-positioned it
in a more vertical stance. Your intuition would say it should be even better. Not so.
The air then became almost intolerable. I stopped on my test ride, put it back the original way, and it was far better. Go figure.
I plan to replace this screen in the fall with a Givi or else the Fabbri, after
having a look at it once it comes out.

That looks really nice. I haven't been too fond of the way windshields look on the 500 (reminds me of a dunkbilled dinosaur), but the proportions look great with your mods. I haven't been having problems with the wind, but I mostly keep her at 70 and under. This post has definitely got me interested in the possibility.

cheers

That looks the ideal placement for a 'lip'. It should move the 'buffet zone' up and away from the helmet - not providing still air. You need moving air to displace rain on the visor.

To get the air to move up you need a curve in the lip. More info here: http://www.laminarlip.com/howwork.php

The "lip" does have a bit of a upturn, though nothing radical. It is what
it is, since I can't actually make one I suppose. It works about as good however as the real one I had on my Scarabeo 500.
I can't really recommend this setup to anyone, as there is still quite a
bit of buffeting going on. I have not had the bike, with the lip on, up
to highway speeds yet, so it might be different now/ but doubt it.
But without it, it all but ripped my Jacket off, with the various airpockets
opened on the jacket, at 60mph. Less so when I zipped them up.
I felt like I was being ransacked by the wind. I wondered what it would have been like with just the "stock" screen.
Took the wife's 500, with the Givi, on a 3 hr run, and though I don't like
what it does lookwise to the bike, it was certainly much better in terms
of comfort and handling than this thing I have concocted.
I did learn a few things about the use of a torch on a windscreen. You
can heat a small area, bend it, and it will remain in that shape when it
cools. I don't think you could control a large area.
The other is that it seems possible to "erase" small scratches through the
careful use of the torch. Nice to know.
I suppose it might look like a Duckbill Dinosaur with the Givi. I tend to think the Givi makesit looks like a troll doll, or, at best, an Australian Collared lizard, but I may just have to get over that.
neither of which I fancy riding about on top of.

Just to wrap up this fairly useless thread, I took the bike
out at appx 70-75 mph this morning, with almost no wind,
and was pleased with the results overall.
The air is hitting the helmet, but not objectionable.
(Full face+ earplugs).
There is some turbulence around the shoulders, though
not as bad as without the lip.
Also, changed jackets, this jacket (BMW airflow) fits tighter and
may invite less wind problems than my other, looser jacket.

I suppose I could recommend it, if you want to do the surgery,
for a summer screen, (if you make the lip as well). It is not perfect
though, and at some angles to the wind at speed, you might find
the airflow a little weird. Overall-I don't mind keeping it a bit.
Its nice to get some air in the hot weather, and in that regard is
a nice improvement over the stock "screen" ( where you get too
much).
Anyone wants to make one I will help if I can.
