Well I enjoy the summer but in maine it may leave. I have rode bicycles in the snow but has anyone rode there scooter in the snow. Any suggestions? I have ridden over seas at -15C and was not to bad with right gear(it was not heated) Is there anywhere out there you can get studed tires for that time of season.

Well, you surely know this bit, but watch for black ice! I used to ride mine late into the winter here in Boston, but after a nasty spill on black ice during a sudden cold snap that was it for me.
Two wheels on the ground doesn't leave much play room for loss of traction... I did find that dressing warm enough wasn't absurdly hard, however. Gloves which DON'T breathe are nice to switch over to. I grew up in VT and I personally wouldn't DREAM of riding my Vespa there in the winter, but that is just me... 3 feet of snow, spells of -30 degrees F. Are you on the coast? That would help with your weather some... inland probably gets insurmountable in February. Don't know where you can get studded tires myself. I know someone in Italy who has tire chains for theirs in the winter! Still... I wouldn't ride in the snow, and up in the VT/Maine neck of the woods the snow can get DEEP. ⚠️ Last edited by xantufrog on UTC; edited 2 times

Yes I am with Salima, if you can stay warm, great, but if there a chance of snow or ice I'd put the keys away for the time being...
BTW if you aren't new to Maine itself and already know the weather I appologize for that assumption! |

Ok so you do know your local weather well then! My guesses based on VT can't beat your first-hand knowledge, and if you think it's do-able then it's do-able! I will say my little 2-stroke ran pretty well in the cold here, though when it WAS bitter cold it was misery giving it ample warm-up time.
My concern would still be that you have one wheel for steering and one for moving, and neither would be great to lose traction on. I find that on my ET2 wind can buffet me good, and I always wonder with such a light bike how much traction I miss over, say a GT200. Would a couple studs in contact with the freezing road at any time be enough at any reasonable speed? What if a gust of wind were to hit you from the side? Maybe someone else has an answer to those questions. I'd hate to find out the hard way (again) by riding on potentially icy roads. I don't want to sound like a nag, and at my young age am more suited for BEING nagged, I've just strived to be a very safe rider and I still had a terrifying fall in the winter and don't want to see it happen to anyone else! I was pretty lucky. I did not have studded tires though (although it is not legal here anyway) But back to the summer with me as well! Safe riding and welcome to MV! ⚠️ Last edited by xantufrog on UTC; edited 3 times

Winter? What's that?
It does get cold here in Pensacola. 40 outside means at least 30 when on the bike or lower on the interstate. Dress warm is a good option. I'm so thankful that I don't have snow to deal with. Or ice. |
