I totally recognized "slippahs", but we weren't allowed to speak pigeon at home...but took me about a year after we returned to the mainland to get rid of the accent...(and a lot of the pigeon). My mom, though still occasionally says puka and we all use skoch still, and it has been 40 years since we lived there. There are some words in most languages that are just too discriptive to lose.

(and I can still sing "Hawai'i Pono'i" after 2 years of singing it every day along with the National anthem in school). Haven't been back.
I lived there in the early 70s. I remember slippahs. How about, "all pow"? I remember "hunna buttah" was a term for snot. I also remember "kill howlie day" not to fondly.

Most folks under 50 don't use those words much anymore for the obvious reasons. Razz emoticon

NOLA JOHN haole surprisingly isn't as derogatory of a term as it once was. There are more haoles in areas where there were none even 10 yrs ago. Demographics out where i live has changed that much. Used to be very few of us haoles in certain areas now waianae is the last area where it's mostly native. Another good word is CHRONIC I also totally love that word.

Heh heh... its an impossible battle, same with fag.

christos x, since you brought up the subject of spunk, I really think you should define it for everyone...

Anyone who enjoys terrible British slang should get into Roger Mellie's profanisaurus.

This link is not work safe if you are British -

ah, the profanisaurus .... viz makes me howl in general but the profanisaurus has been known to get me simultaneously weeping with laughter and cringing at its utter disregard for any form of political correctness or social sensitivity (i.e. 'badly packed kebab').

+1. It was still around and going strong in the late 90's too. I found carring a piece of rebar in your backpack made it much easier.

I just wish they would stop building on oahu. I live in the only area that is still considered country. We still don't even have a stop light and everybody knows who you are. Now if we can only keep it this way.
+1!

You guys need to learn from the folks on Kauai how to keep your island small. They have it down to a science.

Yep, in the 80's I used "rubber" and "fag" in our U.S. office and got very strange looks.

In the office - Someone throw me a rubber? (As above, an eraser)

In the bar - Can I scrounge a fag? (a cigarette)

Best expression is "You Berk!" to tell someone they are an idiot - but it is rhyming slang for an extremely crude word and not many people know it, even in England.

Our tradename for sticky tape is "Sellotape" but our Australian cousins use the name for Rubbers (US meaning).

Oh - Fanny Pack - we call it a "Bum Bag", even though it is worn (usually) at the front - work that one out!

Yes, I should emphasise that it is very very very rude in tone (if you understand it). But I like the fact it manages to offend nearly everybody equally.
