1.x Users: DO NOT try and 'upgrade' to the 2.0 firmware, RESIST all temptation!

iTunes authorization is down (and has been for over 3 hours) and will leave you with an iBrick until it comes back up.
I have three bricked iPhones sitting on my desk.

It's being called the iPocalypse.
One thing is for sure, S. Jobs is having a fit somewhere.

Someone mentioned supply, local Apple Store Mgr told me they have plenty of stock and should not run out all weekend.
I found that shocking since there were over 250 people in line at 1pm, patiently waiting to buy a shiny paperweight.

I'm poking fun but will still get one tomorrow morning, it will activate in a day or two.

Yeah I got sucked in. Took me two hours, but now it finally processed. Still can't change settings on my phone through iTunes (because of the 'can't connect' error) but at least I can use my phone again. Downloaded a few apps as well...pretty cool service.

And I'm now dizzy from playing Super Monkeyball

i have a better one:

go to the store, get in line, pay for the phone with their slider dohicky they wear, they go to get the phone...WE'RE ALL SOLD OUT.

just spent about 20 minutes upgrading my plan to a family plan, paying for all of it, then, no phone.

not to worry though, they expect a seond shipment in 2-3 weeks.

I'd love a few days where I could claim my phone isn't working.

There is one new app that I am totally stoked about, but won't plug until I can try it myself.

Looks like the update has been taken down, so that should curb more people from joining me in the iPocalypse.

I was in the same spot, but kept trying, and eventually it authorized the phone again and restored the backup.

But it took a bunch of tries, and they're definitely having problems.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but you could try downloading the ipsw file here and manually updating with alt.update as in the instructions.

YMMV.
I have an iPod touch so it won't work for me.

Nicky,
I had to update my iTunes before I could update the iPhone.
It told me I was already updated first until I tried to force it to update, then it told me to update iTunes first.

Correct - you must update to iTunes 7.7 before you can update the iPhone to 2.0. If you are running a Mac and still finding the Software Update function is running slow, try downloading from www.itunes.com

Once 7.7 is installed/running, connect the iPhone and from the Summary screen click on the Check for Update button. The file is a big sucker, @ 225 MB. That, however, is not where I personally experienced a bottleneck. The download/install/restart of the phone completed fine, it was the registration process where the phone communicates back to the Apple servers and gets 'reauthorized' that could take hours. That should all be passed and to my knowledge no phones were truly 'bricked', just stuck in limbo until the process completed. You can't use the phone for anything other than a 911 call until the process completes.

To the nay sayers, these 'problems' would be more than welcomed at carrier 'X' or phone manufacturer 'Y'. ATT and Apple are making an ass load of $, and at 70% payout, once the App Store really gets underway, the small time developers will be all smiles, too.

After over four hours of waiting in line, at 11:30 PM we finally all got one of these:
External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text

Tomorrow, before 9, if we present that, we'll get in right away, to claim our prize (God willing, and their POS system being up again).

What PO'd me a bit (quite a bit!) was that AT&T only got 50 phones today, while the Apple store had them growing out their nose--but couldn't handle the activation. And they claimed that AT&T wouldn't be able to handle the traffic. Ha!

I spent 6 hours waiting for AT T to clear a problem
I have a 16 G phone at the apple store. They can not process my order because of a code on my account showing it is a business account (it isn't). I was told at 10Am yesterday it cleared, then again at 12, then again at 4. There have been 3 trouble tickets submitted, and it still isn't cleared. Apple can not process the order with the notation. At T stores have no phones and none are expected.

I am so annoyed with ATT. It should not take them 2 days to clear a notation. The store manager called and was told. They have no way of expediting the problem, but "if I buy one from an ATT store (that have none!) it will not be an issue.

The worst part now is that my old phone was accidently deactivated at the store. They cannot reactivate it, and can not sell me a new phone.

Last year it was so easy, now AT T is making the Apple stores activate the phones before you can leave the store, but they have made it impossible to sell if there is any glitch on the account erroneous or not.

At any rate, last word is the hope to have it cleared within 2-3 days. I am phoneless until then!

Updated my 1st gen iphone last night--working perfectly. Have six new apps.

Apple screwed the pooch with the launch but the 2.0 update and the App Store rocks.

Still don't know if Apple was running at less than 100% server capacity due to some hardware/software failure or if they simply got run over by demand - probably will never know.

Talked to the Mgr of my local ATT store on release day and he told me ATT had an issue on their end too that day, the extent of which I don't know.

Either way, it's a shame the Black Market in iPhones caused the restrictions it did this go-round. It's hard to fault ATT (Apple doesn't care unless the phones are stolen) for it's measures to ensure the iPhone stays on it's network. The $15 more per month + taxes (data and text messages) over my existing iPhone plan is what's keeping me from upgrading to the 2.0 hardware. I'll sit tight to see what happens with future plans or possibly even Rev 3.

As noted, the 2.0 software is the mutz nutz.

Yesterday when I went to put my scooter jacket back on after our rally was over, I pulled my old cell phone only to find that the screen had cracked while in my jacket pocket. Crying or Very sad emoticon I wasn't planning on getting a new cell phone for another year until my contract with it was over. Now that is it cracked, I am really tempted to get a new iPhone. I will have to pay $100 to get out of my contract early as my current provider does not have the iPhone. As well, the plans that Rogers is offering for voice and data have been called the most expensive in the world by some I have spoken to.
Should I take the plunge and get myself a new iPhone for my cellphone needs? Is it really all that it is cracked up to be?

If you get one, you can easily view MV pages, posts, and photos in all their glory, and probably add thousands more posts to your total! Talk about addiction...

I have the first one, not the new one. Wife gave it to me for Christmas. It replaced a simple, phone-only cell for me.

It was literally like night and day, and changed the way I think about what I'm able to do with a portable phone/camera/internet access tool. And I think the interface aspects of it are way better than anything else out there, especially the pinching, zooming, panning, etc.

Oh yeah, it also replaced my Ipod for me too.

But I'm a geek, like gadgets, and use the internet a lot for stuff.

If you are none-of-the-above..then it might be overkill for your needs. It's definitely cool, but sounds like you have to pay a little more right now to get it.

But if you don't have something like a Crackberry as your current cell, then I think you will surprise yourself by how much you will start using this kind of appliance to do stuff.
