I bought an 07' avio gray GTV about a month ago. Yesterday the low gas light came on, I was excited because I have yet to put any gas in her. The question is she has 95.4 miles on her, and with a 2.5 gal gas tank thats roughly 38 mpg's. I was expecting at least 60 mpg's. Am I crazy for expecting that or is there something wrong? Maybe because it's new and not broken in, maybe it's the way I drive her. I don't know if I should just take her into the dealer( whom I would rather never deal with again)? Or just suck it up. Help me understand please.

Your gas mileage during the early part of the break-in period often starts off at about half of what you should be getting, but improves as you rack up miles.

If the engine still tight then it will use more fuel .
have you filled up yet as you may only fit 1.5 -2 gallons in your tank |

Don't mean to be smart, but...
If this is your first tank of gas then how canyou be sure that it was really full when you bought the scoot? Maybe the dealer saved $4.
It could happen Dave |

I highly doubt you put 2.5 gallons back in, more like 1.8-2.1 if the light came on. that comes out to around 53mpg at 1.8 gallons added this assuming that the dealer topped it off completely. You should expect 60+mpg for non-aggressive city riding and 50ish mpg for extended highway speeds and aggressive riding.
enjoy the ride, your vespa will run better, get better mpg and be an overall better experience once you hit the 1K mark. |

My fuel light comes on after using 1.6 g, and that is a fairly typical experience, judging from many forum postings I've read. Make sure you've read the postings about how to fill your tank without spilling before you try it.

I had my first "fill up" this morning. 92 miles on the odometer. Gauge almost at E (fuel light wasn't on though). It took 1.26 gallons. 73 mpg!
I say "fill up" because I only went to the first click but the gauge read only 3/4 full. I'll have to play with the pump more to figure out how to get it to F without over filling. I tried the method mentioned in that one thread on how to fill the tank and that's why I stopped at the first click. I didn't stick the nozzle all the way in though. I know my tank was full because I used a gas can to fill it up (I didn't have my permit at the time so I couldn't drive it to the gas station). The dealer delivered it to me with no fuel (the fuel light was on!). Anyway, if I got 73 mpg, and it's supposed to get better after the break-in period, I'll be more happy than I am now. |

Probably started out with much less than a full tank. Mine left the dealership with just a bit over half tank.j''

I filled up today - 2.7 gallons, and it spilled a little (all inside the area). I took one of the towels, dunked it in water and wiped the area out, then dried it with another towel. This is the second time I've filled up, and I didn't spill the first time.
I keep track of the miles out and the gallons in, and so far, I'm getting about 52. I have less than 500 miles on her, so I know it will go up. |

DON'T OVERFILL YOUR TANK just to get the gauge to read "right".
On a small, irregularly shaped tank as found on a scooter, your gas gauge should be considered a guide, not bible. 1. align the nozzle parallel to the length of the bike, with your hand directly over the puppy warmer. Insert the nozzle all the way in. 2. Operate the pump at a medium speed--don't squeeze the handle all the way, but too slow is a problem too (the shutoff may not work if you're pumping too slow). Squeeze the handle about halfway or so--you will get a feel. If you've ever filled a gas can you'll already know how fast the gas should flow. 3. When the pump shuts itself off, you're done. Besides the mess and the smell, overfilling can cause major headaches with evaporative recovery system and filling the neck in hot weather can cause fuel to expand and mess things up anyway even if you didn't spill a drop. Checking your gas mileage can be a lot trickier than you would think. Since you are only dealing with a maximum of 2.5 gallons which is a pretty small amount, if you don't fill the tank to the exact level it was filled to on the prior tank your gas mileage could be considerably inaccurate. Different gas stations have different nozzles and the auto shut off can vary quite a bit as well. Not wanting to overfill the tank because the the evaporation tank and the mess you might make is another factor. After you add in the the numerous variables getting an accurate figure gets next to impossible! With a GTV if you keep you speed under 60 MPH or so I would just plan on getting 65 to 70 MPG after the initial 600 mile service. If you are running WOT on the freeway you will see the mileage drop considerably. The most important thing is to just enjoy your ride and be safe out there!!
