i am a guy who hates macs. i'm the guy always making fun of mac people, the mac culture, etc.

just got the new 3g this weekend and bought mobile me.

this is the coolest application i have ever seen. it will make a blackberry obsolete. there is no need to have al of that blackberry server crap running with this.

i pushed 127 contacts and 2 years worth of my calendar to the phone in about 3 mintues.

i am about 80% of the way through email.

it is unbelievable.

i might buy a mac.

..just bustin' your ovaries, Olivia.

I'm not smart enough to know how Apple does it, I just sit back and marvel at it from a distance in silent appreciation.

OK, that's not entirely true - sometimes, involuntarily, I say "cool' out loud.

i'm not even kidding you, i could do 10:1 setting people up for a corporate iphone opposed to a blackberry. there's no f-ing around with crap, you set the mobile me account and tweak the phone and it's done. there's no synching cables crap, installing apps to the desktop, synching the phone, adding user in bsaadmin, etc. it's idiot simple.

plus, that idisk thing will be a godsend for all the 10,000 people i have that can't figure out how to type ftp.whatever.com into a browser and login to their ftp account.

And forget about tethering...there are no plans for the iphone to support it.

Being able to tether from my car into our VPN has saved me a million times.

I have the original iPhone for personal use, which I can sync my work contacts and work calendar. I can get work email from home(MacBook Pro), so no need to add exchange.

I'm also a .mac member, now mobile me. I love the ease of use and platform of iPhone more than bberry, but it so somewhat slow. Now that I've installed 2.0 and downloaded some cool apps.

I really don't to upgrade to G3 because I'm pissed that ATT increased monthly fees by at least $15 (10 for g3 and 5 for texting). Screw them, I'm fine with the original one as I have wifi pretty much everywhere.

That is a pisser. Not a feature I personally have used a lot in the past with other phones (primarily due to speed), but still nice to have as a b/u even though the carriers gouge you for it. Still, I would expect it at some point - it may even be a simple software update.

Apple really does go the extra mile to make things simple.

I had an "aha" moment a while back when I replaced my old Netgear router with a new Time Capsule. I'd set aside a half hour for the usual screwing around with IP addresses, ports, and other arcane crapola. Lo and behold though, when you start up the Time Capsule, it somehow sucks all the settings off the old router and you don't have to touch a thing. Brilliant.

vpn support is a valid complaint, but i know almost all of the people i've ever had to support use the blackberry for looking at

1. web pages
2. exchange email

the iphone does both of these wonderfully, and honestly, the solution they have com up with is elegat compared to the blackberry.

just not having to search for the latest version of the blackberry client and install it alone saves 90% of the time invlved with user setup.

i'm sure the hardcore people will stay with blackberry, but for normal office people the mobile me thing is great.

This 'mobile me' thing is great so far (only been using since Sat). I hate my crackberry for work now as it feels like 1980 all over again stumbling around on it. Now I need to get my employer to dump the crack and go for the I.

Not for me - I've got a static IP, and use OpenDNS servers. Plus it pulled over all the port forwarding info. Very nice.

For anyone who uses an iPhone and needs a synced calendar and native task list app, I can't recommend highly enough the combo of Google Calendar, Remember The Milk (Pro) and Todo for the iPhone (just released in the App Store).

Very easy and cheaper than Mobile Me ($25 year for RTM Pro). Todo is great as a mobile task list ($10).

How do you sync your Google calendar? Or do you just use the browser version?

I've been using OmniFocus on the mac and phone now, and I'm really happy with it. Not cheap though (but I was able to piggyback sync onto my wife's .mac account)

I use the iphone browser version of Google Calendar. Not ideal, but passable. Curiously, I've not been able to pull more than one iCal calendar into the iPhone's native calendar app.

My primary need was to have a native, synced task list on the iPhone and this set up does that version well. Google Calendar and RTM work great together, too.

Heard good things about OmniFocus.

I have had no problems with my ical. I currently have 6 calenders synced to my phone with no issues.

I have not had a lot of time to mess with mobile me but it does seem like a super simple way to get everything done

Re: [nsr] mobile me. this will be the death of blackberry
chad-

Welcome to the other side...it's better here!

I sold my Blackberry and went to the iPhone on release day last year.
I personally think the iPhone internet experience is world's better, truly like the internet in your pocket.

Mobile Me & v2.0 of the iPhone OS finally make wireless syncing possible, a big step forward.

kyle - I looked at it again and figured it out. Yeah, I can get all my iCals on the iPhone calendar app.

But then I remembered why I don't use it. I have to physically sync to update. This, of course, is one of the key things that MobileMe is meant to address.

And the solution that I'm now using, GCal/RTM/Todo, addresses this, too (but it skips the native iPhone calendar).

I've only had a MacBook for about a year and a half ... LOVE it ...

Was not even tempted by the first iPhone, but when I saw that the iPhone 3G has GSM and GPS, I was ready to sign up.

Got one on Saturday ... LOVE it ...

AND ----- the TomTom GPS people are building an app for it!!!

Here's the tantalizing tidbit:

So I'm not too familiar with Mobile Me, but the biggest thing that Blackberry has going for it is that it is fully usable in an Exchange environment. That has been the biggest knock against Macs (and iPhones) in the workplace. There are workarounds, but there is not 100% compatibility.

It sounds like Mobile Me is a great solution for small businesses and personal use. But as long as MS Exchange is the dominant email app, and it will be for a long time, Apple has its work cut out for them in the business world. And that is where Blackberry thrives.

I have heard that the new iPhones will support ActiveSync, which if true, may give BB a run for their money.

You don't even need MobileMe for the iPhone to work with exchange. Apple has an exchange server plugin that enables push email. I have a buddy who works for Accenture (not a small biz at all) and he picked up his iPhone 3g on launch day and had it working with push email that afternoon.

I think one issue big issue for businesses is the cost of the device. Blackberries are relatively cheap, especially older models. So, if an employee loses one, it's a quick and easy replacement. And if I had a company and was giving my employees devices to check email, I'd want them to only be checking email, and not doing non work related stuff on it - which would be hard to avoid on the iphone.

Sounds like your friend is using the ActiveSync method.

I know that even the first generation iPhones had Exchange Account as an email option, but that was only for setting up email. It did not allow syncing of Contacts, Calendar, etc. ActiveSync would allow all of that.

I've been a Mac user since 2004 and as a convert I can tell you that EVERYTHING I've tried with the Mac is so much simpler. So much so that there is an "unlearn" period from Windows. I can only imagine it's like being in prison for 5 years and you have to just readjust. FREE AT LAST!

I got .mac because I wanted to stop changing email addresses and I've always thought that people who use Yahoo email as their main address were cheap. Razz emoticon SO! I go it and I have to tell you that website creation using iWeb is a snatch! Wait, cinch! Yes, cinch. As is everything else it does, including iDisk.

When they transitioned .mac to MobileMe I was really set to be annoyed and disappointed, but everything has been working perfectly. I love it! I get mail and contacts and calendar and I don't sync my iPhone as much. Everything is just all updated. It causes me to use the calendar more, too, which makes me more organized.

Also? Networking Macs is WAY easier than with Windows. I've never been able to successfully network Windows computers, which isn't that big of a deal, I'm not a network guy. But I've been able to network and share drives on my Macs since day 1.

Welcome...I've always said I'll gladly help any switcher that needs it and I will. Feel free to PM me and I will answer questions or you can drop me a message on iChat.
