I usually cover it when not riding. I do this mostly for security. Even with a cover in really hard rain it still gets wet. How bad is this for Vespa? I have on several occasions got cought with no cover as well.

Don't be afraid to get it wet - it won't hurt it a bit. Eventually, you may even need to wash it - in which case, I recommend water.

For the most part, scooters are very weather resistant. Heck, I ride mine in the rain all the time, and store it outside all the time, albeit, I do have a car port to store it under when it's home. It will deteriorate more from neglect than from rain. When you use a cover, use one that has a ventilation flap so that the moisture can evaporate away more easily. The only condition I think is not good for a scoot is if you're storing it for, say, an entire season, and it's covered in snow. That's definitely not good. If you live in Virginia...that'll never be a problem, since it snows all of twice a year there.

Ah - but if you don't break the snow off when it does snow it will stay there for a very long time. I know this from experience!

The scooter holds up quite well in rain. The stock exhaust does not. YMMV.

I've got a GTS, this is it's third year on the road. With the exception of winter from November to March, it is never inside and I've never owned a cover. No rust, no electronics issues... no worries.

Rain is like a soapless carwash.

Heck, most of the time I don't even use the seat condom. (only when it's parked in a pigeon or seagull infested area)

Mine lives outside year round. I drive in the rain all the time. My little ET is a trooper about it. I'm sure yours will be fine. At 5 years old mine shows no sign of rust!

it got wet? take it in for a professional drying. this is important that it's dried to spec or it may over dry, which may void your warranty.

If I didn't ride in the rain, I would hardly be riding at all last month.

So true. Repaint it with high heat paint from time to time to keep it looking spiffy.

Hi,

wet condition itself will do nothing to the scooter itself. The ori-exhaust will rust sooner or later, even faster, if your scoot will see salted roads in winter or if you live near the ocean.
Salt should be eventually washed away.

Something real good in terms of prolonging life time:
Treat the contact areas where the metal sheets are welded together and all areas where the sheets are so near together, that water can stay for a longer while in between with wax.

bye

It rains a lot in Florida, especially in summer. I have no garage, and when the scooter is already wet, well, you can't put the cover on then ...

My dealer advised me NOT to buy a GTS with a leather seat because "that's not really ideal for Florida, if you plan on actually riding it."

One bad thing I have noticed -- the bolts on my rear rack (which is the painted-to-match rack that comes with the pricey Vespa top case) are starting to RUST ... or rather, the bolt holes in the rack are rusting.

Any advice???
