Logic and reason are on the side of gearing up, but the gear debate ties in with many riders' feelings about personal freedoms and the reasons they ride. I have read Proficient Motorcycling; very early in the book, Hough makes a point of noting that riders have different levels of risk acceptance.
Good that you took the MSF. I took it after I'd been riding for a year or so and afterwards wished I'd done it sooner.
