Did anyone watch VH1-CL tonight ? They had a tribute to the WHO. Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Flaming Lips...plus the WHO. I thought it was a great show. Foo Fighters kicked booty...Pearl Jam did two songs from Quadrophenia and the WHO sounded great...considering they are in there 60's they can still hang the young guys. If you missed it...they are rerunning it again tonight and again tomorrow...well worth the viewing. Do check your listings....enjoy and rock on !

They need to retire Baba O'Riley. Roger and Pete just can't hold those notes anymore. Other than that, it was pretty great.

It was pretty great.
You should check out the "Amazing Journey" documentary as well. If you missed it, I'm sure they'll show it about 50 times before the weekend is up. |

That show was pretty good last night. I actually got chills during a couple of the performances, namely the 2nd Foo Fighters song (Bargain) and the first Incubus song (See for Miles) (did I just say I liked Incubus?). Zak Starkey might blow away his pops, but Foo drummer blows away Zak. The Lips were predictably performing in a class all their own, but I think the Pearl Jam performance was as forgettable as anything they put out since their second album.
The Who need to retire Baba O'Reily? I think they need to retire.... PERIOD! I'm all for older musicians keeping it going - The Rolling Stones are still one of the BEST live acts you can see - but one-half of the Who is not the Who. Their music was "Maximum RnR" built on energy, windmills, jumping, and frantic drumming. Unfortunately, all that testosterone took it's toll and they ended up with tone deaf ears, broken bloody finger tips, and sore hips. Take Moon and Entwistle out of the equation and it puts too much focus on Daltry and Townshend, and those guys aren't the ones you want to see up close and in HDTV! |

The story behind Zak Starkey is that Ringo didn't want his son being a drummer, so Keith Moon was the one who gave Zak his first kit and taught him to play. That's why his style is similar.
And are you kidding about Pearl Jam's performance being forgettable? Were you watching the same show? Eddie Vedder was the only one out of the entire lineup who can put the same kind of raw emotion into it as Roger could. They should have reversed the order (played Real Me first), but they totally schooled the other bands. As for Pete and Roger? Let's just say I can only hope I look that good when I'm 63/64. Pete might not be able to write as well as he once did, and Roger may not be able to hit the same notes, but they still put on a hell of a show. |

Quote: But Ringo never played in the Who... Maybe, I was just a bit cranky yesterday but I saw a bit of the Who performance and I thought it was lackluster. I thought Roger and Pete were ok but the rhythm section completely uninspired. Possibly a more energetic performance by Zak and the bass player (Pino?) could have made it more enjoyable. Maybe I'm a bit harsh, but these guys are pros and should be able play with a little more enthusiasm. |

The Who music was/is about the best going , I lived through it and my teen boys listen and identify with the raw rebellious form but the VH1 show for me was pretty poor in my opinion. I thought one telling factor was that the the only "tribute" performer that could almost carry a tune was Jack Black! Call me too picky but mostly I found the show dissapointing and would have liked to have more original WHO footage. I thought the imitations didn't cut it. But I love The Who. As always each to their own perspective

It's not about them being old, it's just about them going through the motions. |
