OK so I picked up some Hub oil from my local bike shop, and just did my first Engine and Hub oil change.

The Engine oil I used it Motol, no worries there...

Here is my question the hub oil is "Shaft Drive Gear Oil" SAE 80W-90 API Service GL-4, GL-5

My concern is the "GL-4, GL-5" part. The manual says to use oil that exceeds GL-3 specifications, I just want to make sure what I put in is good for the bike.

Thanks a lot

I believe gl-4 and gl-5 exceed and include gl-3 therefore making it equivalent.

If I am wrong people will chime in and I too will learn which is the great thing about the internet! One way or another we will learn!!!

I use belray gear lube and it does conform to gl5. if you got to their web site you can read all about the different specs and what they mean.

Heck, I'm impressed. You changed it on your own?? I have not graduated to doing that yet. Too many specifics. I used to change the gear oil in my outboard engines, but there at least, there was access to the screw and you just kept pumping until the oil overflowed through the top port.

Ya know, the hub oil was a LOT easier than the Engine oil.

I used a snap-on (funky little) Oil grabber wrench http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?search=true&item_ID=11539&PartNo=FWA62121&group_id=1534&supersede=&store=snapon-store&tool=all ) . The OEM filter does not have much in the way of grooves for it to grab hold of. What I wound up doing is really hard to describe... just realize it was time consuming.. and a pain in the ass.

The next engine oil change is going to be a LOT easier, as the hi-Flo filter as some notches the tool I have can grab ahold of.

With the Hub oil the only hard part was reaching the hub oil dip stick. But I found that a socket fit the head of it. So I put it on an extension and used it like a screw driver. It is plastic so I would not suggest using the actually socket wrench on it. For draining it I just bent a plastic container up between the drain and the rear tire.

Honestly I am not the most mechanically inclined guy in the world. I just decided to take some time and try to enjoy working on my bike. Aside from some minor cursing with the filter, I actually enjoyed it a lot.
