I have a GTS 250 with about 5,000 mile on it. I was checking over things in the owner's manual and it listed replacing the variator, slide block and rollers as something the should be done every 6,000 miles. The schedule in the online shop manual has it at every 20,000 KM or about 10,000 or 12,000 miles. Which is it? Can they just be inspected or should they be replaced?

I live about 500 miles from the nearest Vespa dealer so I will be doing the maintanence work myself. I am a maintanence tech at a power plant and work on pumps, geardrives and etc. so I am quite confident of my ability but any information, and tips (over and above that found in the manual) especially by someone who has done the work would be very much appreciated.

Check them all at 6000 miles. Replace the belt and rollers - these are now very cheap, and the labour cost to replace over check is sweet FA. It would be unusual to replace the variator itself. The surfaces of both pulleys may need cleaning if exuberant riding has been done...

The power of punctuation

You want to check your punctuation and contemplate on its power.

The correct punctuation is this, and you will be relieved by it:

variator rollers/sliding blocks

£220 for service!!!
Hey, very stupid question..

just done my 10000km service on GTS 300. I got only 8000, but what a heck!

Anyway, they charged me £220!!!! Crying or Very sad emoticon Crying or Very sad emoticon Crying or Very sad emoticon

So being unhappy to pay soooo much i decided to check what was done.

They replaced

Air filter (shouldn't it be only cleaned??)
Engine oil
Oil Filter
Spark plug
Brake pads
Belt

Now my question:

In manual it states that Sliding Blocks/ Variable Speed Rollers needs to be replaced.

Does "Belt" in my invoice mean the same as "Sliding Blocks/ Variable Speed Rollers"??

I can't speak for the terminology or slang that your specific service shop is using on their invoices but you BELT and your Rollers are two different items.

With out going into whether or not the rate you were charged was fair....

Yes, it is convenient to change both while your down there and yes, they are related items but they are not one in the same and I see no reason why they would list "Belt" and mean "belt and rollers".

And yes your rollers should be changed or at least inspected at the 10,000km service.

I see, will have to ask them.

What is then Sliding Blocks?

Sliding block would be the variator. Block is another name for a pulley.

Very stupid me.. so just to make sure:

Sliding Blocks/ Variable Speed Rollers ==> Rollers ?

when it manual it is said to replace Sliding Blocks/ Variable Speed Rollers it actually means just replace rollers?

The Sliding Blocks are the U-shaped nylon pieces that fit on the backing plate . The variator pulley has tabs that fit into these. They provide for a smoother action of the variator.

They should be checked at the same time you check/replace rollers. They usually last quite a bit longer than the rollers or belt.

I think. Experts chime in please.

Paul is right - and they rarely need changing.

GBP220 is about right for a full 10,000km (6,000mile) service if they did all the checks they should have done. If/when it is out of warranty and you might do it yourself you'll only save the labour charge - but you will know your bike a lot better!

Ah.. I see. But what's the difference if it is still under warranty when you do service - price is the same coz warranty does not cower service.

OK, still confused coz Sliding Blocks/ Variable Speed Rollers for me as a total idiot sound like two different things. I got no idea. And in manual it states that after 10000 km you need to replace Sliding Blocks/ Variable Speed Rollers. I got replaced only belt. So does it mean I go to my dealer and ask him to replace Sliding Blocks AND Variable Speed Rollers

or

I go to my dealer and ask him to replace rollers?

The dealer will have inspected the rollers and would have replaced them if they needed to be replaced, same with the sliding blocks. As they didn't replace them you can assume they were just fine.

Your two-year EU warranty is liable to be void if the services are not done on time and entered into the Piaggio database.

The rules are different in the US, where I understand you can do all the work yourself during warranty provided you can show receipts for all the parts.

Wear on your transmission components is dependent on your specific situation, and may vary dramatically.

With the belt, it is always best to err on the conservative side as a failure could be disasterous. Rollers not so much.

Your dealer was in the transmission case and determined you needed a belt but your rollers were fine. This is perfectly plausible, and I wouldn't worry.

Hey, thanks a lot everyone!! Really appreciate it! ;o)

I just think if it needs to be changes after 10k, and it wasn't, to all my maintenance schedule is messed up now. Coz I move from city to city and have several dealers. They never tell me what exactly was done on the bike and say full service. And they don't really themselves know what needs to be done. They sill said me that service needs to be done every 3k, which is not correct with GTS 300. I just do not trust dealers at all. That's it.
